Michigan 29, Minnesota 26

The Gophers fell to Michigan 29-26 tonight in Minneapolis.  The Gophers fall to 4-4 on the season.  What a heartbreaker to lose this game on the last play of the game.  Clock management was not good at the end of the game for the Gophers, I sure hope that doesn't cost Tracy Claeys the full time job.  Let's not overreact to this loss though, Minnesota was a two touchdown underdog and they really did outplay Michigan, they just couldn't finish. Tough loss.

Observations:

• The Little Brown Jug heads back to Ann Arbor. 
• Can we have that last 19 seconds back please?  
• Was Michigan offsides on the last play of the game?  
• It was nice to see Briean Boddy-Calhoun back on the field. 
• Is there a better kicker in the B1G than Ryan Santoso?  
• Brandon Lingen is becoming quite the weapon at TE for Minnesota. 
• I really liked the Gopher linebackers tonight. 
• Minnesota gained 461 yards against Michigan's number 1 in the country defense.

• I've been impressed with Andrew Stelter this season. 
• Too many line drive punts by Peter Mortell this year. 
• It was not a good night for Kunle Ayinde. 
• Start that slide just a little earlier next time Jake Rudock. 
• Jabrill Peppers is good.  Go to the NFL early please! 
• All of Minnesota seems to already miss Jerry Kill.

Oregon 61, Arizona State 55 (3 OT)

The Sun Devils fell to Oregon 61-55 tonight in triple overtime at Sun Devil Stadium.  Arizona State falls to 4-4 on the season.  This one really stings, they really did outplay Oregon, but poor officiating, questionable playcalling & mental lapses killed them in the end though.  You can stick a fork in their PAC-12 South hopes now too, they are just playing for another middling bowl game at this point.  Very disappointing.

Observations:

• Mike Bercovici had himself a nice game, for the most part. 
• Having Kalen Ballage & Demario Richard both healthy helps. 
• Arizona State wasn't playing smart late in the game. 
• Bralon Addison sure looked out of bounds on that OT TD catch. 
• Oregon was clearly offsides on that Bercovici interception. 
• D.J. Foster still needs more touches!  Get the man the ball! 
• More Red Zone troubles for the Sun Devils. 
• You're better than that Zane Gonzales. 
• Total Yards:  Arizona State 741, Oregon 501
• First Downs:  Arizona State 37, Oregon 20

Rock the Kasbah

Rock the Kasbah - starring Bill Murray & Kate Hudson.  Murray stars as Richie Lanz, a washed up talent agent/huckster who decides to take his sole remaining talented act (Ronnie, played by Zooey Deschanel) to Afghanistan to rock a middle east USO tour.  On their first night in Afghanistan, Ronnie has second thoughts and splits the country along with all of Richie's money and his passport.  Richie is thus left trapped in a dangerous land with very few options.  He agrees to help some rogue American arms dealers (played by Scott Caan & Danny McBride) in exchange for a lot of cash and an expedited passport.  While trying to negotiate an arms deal he finds himself in a Pashtun village where he discovers an incredibly talented Pashtun girl singing in a cave.  At that point, Richie feels like he had found his new purpose in life and sets out to help this girl win the very popular "Afghan Star" talent show (a sort of "American Idol" in Afghanistan).  All in all, it was rather disappointing.  I'm just not quite sure what kind of movie they were setting out to make, it wasn't really a comedy, it wasn't a war movie, it wasn't an action movie, it wasn't a drama, it's just very hard to categorize, perhaps comedy/drama fits the bill, although it was light on both.  Murray, who I've been a huge fan of for years, seemed to sleepwalk through his performance.  Kate Hudson seemed to be trying to reprise her Penny Lane performance in the far superior "Almost Famous".  Bruce Willis seems to be becoming a caricature of himself.  A bit more of Zooey Deschanel may have helped but she departed early.  Overall, very disappointing, I had high hopes for another great Bill Murray comedy, and this was far from that.

I will give it 2 out of 5 stars (*****).

Cardinals 26, Ravens 18

The Cardinals beat the Ravens 26-18 tonight in Glendale on MNF.  The Cardinals improve to 5-2 on the season with this victory.  They didn't make it look easy though, they dominated most of the game but had a punt blocked late that led to a Raven touchdown and didn't manage the clock very well down the stretch.  A win is a win though, you take them any way you can get them in the NFL.

Observations:

• Tyrann Mathieu was everywhere once again for the Cardinals. 
• I loved seeing that sack from Dwight Freeney!  
• The Cardinals need to get their special teams fixed. 
• Tony Jefferson really came up big when he needed to. 
• Chris Johnson plays well on Monday Night Football. 
• Justin Bethel is still the best special teams player in the NFL.
• That last drive by the Cardinals had me a bit perplexed. 
• I hope that Jerraud Powers isn't out long. 
• Total Yards:  Cardinals 414, Ravens 276
• Rushing Yards:  Cardinals 150, Ravens 55
• Turnovers:  Ravens 2, Cardinals 0
• Did I really see Chris Johnson get run down from behind?  
• That blocked punt by the Ravens was almost a killer. 
• It was nice to see Jermaine Gresham finally contributing.  
• Carson Palmer has had a nice career for himself. 
• Chris Catanzaro hasn't been Mr. Automatic like he was last year. 
• Why build a retractable dome if you never open it up?  
• Some horrible officiating tonight, on both sides. 
• I was hoping to get a look at Maxx Williams tonight.

2016 Presidential Field Update

Jim Webb has called quits on his 2016 Presidential ambitions.  Well, for now anyways.  Same with Lincoln Chafee.  Joe Biden also finally announced that he will not seek the Presidency in 2016.  That leaves us with 19 candidates still in the running, 15 Republicans and 4 Democrats.

Here's how the remaining rank in my opinion (as far as their chances):

The Republican will hold their next debate on October 28, I suspect some of the also rans of their party (I'm speaking to you Santorum, Graham, Jindal, Pataki & Gilmore) will start dropping off not long after that.  As for Webb?   Let him run as an Independent, he would only drain votes from the GOP (if Trump or Carson get the nomination) if he did that as he's got no support among Democrats.  Chafee really had no choice but to drop out after his disastrous debate performance and his lack of funding.  

Vikings 28, Lions 19

The Vikings went into Detroit today and knocked off the Lions 28-19 for a rare road division win.  The Vikings improve to 4-2 on the season with this win.  The Vikings started slow in this one, they had some coverage issues that Matthew Stafford was able to exploit, but from the second quarter on it was all Vikings.  You cannot help but be impressed with the way they played today.  If their offensive line can come around, they will be a team to keep an eye on.  Nice win Vikings!

Observations:

• I don't think that Stefon Diggs is going to lose his starting spot. 
• The Vikings pass rush was relentless today. 
• You cannot stop Adrian Peterson, you can only hope to contain him. 
• The Vikings really need to do a better job with their red zone offense. 
• That was easily one of the best games I've seen from Teddy Bridgewater. 
• Blair Walsh appears to be over his early season struggles. 
• The Vikings UCLA linebacker tandem is very impressive. 
• Sharrif Floyd would have probably helped today. 
• First quarter scoring:  Lions 14, Vikings 6
• Second-Fourth quarter scoring:  Vikings 25, Lions 5
• Total Yards:  Vikings 425, Lions 274

• The Vikings offensive line still has lots of room for improvement. 
• That late goal line stand by the Vikings defense was huge.

• It may be time for a change of scenery for Matthew Stafford.

I'm guessing that Chip Kelly would have to be fired from the Eagles for him to take the position, I doubt that happens.  John Gruden would be Pete Carroll 2, I think he'd be a great pick for Southern California and I'm guessing it's one of the very few landing spots that would be really attractive to him.  Mark Dantonio has established himself as a terrific coach, USC is a terrific opportunity, it seems like it would be a great match to me.  Whittingham & Mendenhall are established coaches with lots of west coast ties, either one would make sense to me.  Bob Stoopes has long been one of the premier coaches in college football, it may be time for a change of scenery though and USC would be foolish to not at least look into it.  Kevin Sumlin is one of the top young coaches in college football, I can understand some interest in him from USC, I doubt he leaves though, he's got a pretty good gig as it is.  Jeff Fisher is a USC alumnus, it's probably one of the few landing spots he'd considering if he were to leave the NFL.  If they want a young up and coming coach with their best years still ahead of them, I don't think they could find 2 better candidates than Tom Herman and Justin Fuentes, if I'm Pat Haden, those would be the 2 I reach out to first.

The Cardinals went into Pittsburgh today and were knocked off 25-13 by the Steelers.  The Cardinals drop to 4-2 on the season with this loss.  I'm not so sure that the Steelers won this one as much as the Cardinals gave it away, they kept shooting themselves in the foot.  The officiating didn't help much either.  Either way, the Cardinals still hold a 2 game lead in the NFC West, they'd better get their shit together if they want to hold on because the Seahawks and Rams aren't going to quit pushing.

Observations:

• It was interesting that Andre Ellington got the start over Chris Johnson. 
• I just love the Cardinals secondary.  Best in the NFL?  
• It's about time that Michael Floyd reach the end zone. 
• Carson Palmer to John Brown is a nice way to start a game. 
• Larry Fitzgerald knows how to get Yards After Catch! 
• I don't care where they line up Deone Bucannon as long as he's out there.

Vikings 16, Chiefs 10

The Vikings knocked off the Chiefs 16-10 today in Minneapolis.  The Vikings improved to 3-2 on the season with this win.  It wasn't the prettiest win, but in the NFL you take them anyway you can get them.  Teams seem to be focusing on stopping Adrian Peterson, the Vikings thus need to becoming more consistent using their other weapons.  A win is a win!

Observations:

• It's very important that the Vikings stretch the field. 
• Eric Kendricks is an impressive looking rookie LB. 
• It was nice to see something positive out of Kyle Rudolph. 
• How do you keep Stefon Diggs off the field when everyone is healthy?
• Kansas City's plan was obviously to stop Adrian Peterson. 
• Isn't holding in the end zone suppose to result in a safety? 
• Danielle Hunter did a nice job filling in for Everson Griffen. 
• I'm still waiting for Mike Wallace to emerge at a true number one WR.

• The Vikings 2015 rookie class has been very impressive thus far.

Utah 34, Arizona State 18

Arizona State lost to Utah 34-18 last night in Salt Lake City.  The Sun Devils fall to 4-3 on the season.  Arizona State kept it close against the fourth ranked team in the country for most of the game, that fourth quarter was a disaster though.  Their offense also went AWOL.  It's looking like another middling Bowl Game for the Sun Devils.

Observations:

• Tim White has really got a knack for returning kickoffs.
• Demario Richard could have helped Arizona State. 
• Mike Bercovici doesn't look like the same QB I saw last season. 
• The Sun Devils did a nice job of slowing Utah's running game. 
• Utah doesn't need no stinking blitz. 
• Arizona State drops way too many passes. 
• DJ Calhoun is becoming a force to be reckoned with for the Sun Devils. 
• I had higher hopes for Arizona State's offensive line this season. 
• Rushing Yards:  Arizona State 15, Utah 72
• Turnovers:  Arizona State 2, Utah 0
• 4th Quarter Scoring:  Utah 20, Arizona State 0
• Utah's bit of trickery on that kickoff return was laughably bad. 
• Devin Lucien has been a nice addition to the Sun Devil football program. 
• So much for that Arizona State 11 game win streak over Utah.

• How do you signal a safety in football again? 
• Arizona State is just lacking in top notch talent this season.

Nebraska 48, Minnesota 25

The Gophers fell to Nebraska 48-25 today in Minneapolis.  The Gophers fall to 4-3 on the season. The Gopher defense just didn't show up today, it was easily their worst performance of the season. Their offense can't be let off the hook either though, it's kind of hard to establish yourself as a power rushing team when you can only rush the ball for 65 yards.  This was a tough loss too, because the next three games are going to be brutal (Michigan, Ohio State & Iowa).  2 wins for bowl eligibility is starting to look a bit questionable at this point.  Very disappointing performance by the Gophers.

Observations:

• Mitch Leidner actually had a nice game throwing the football. 
• That 99 yard touchdown drive in the 3rd quarter by Nebraska was a killer. 
• It was nice to see Eric Carter with a TD catch. 
• Nebraska won the battle of the trenches, on both sides of the ball.  
• Minnesota's pass rush really needs to find a way to up the pressure. 
• Someone please explain to me that late field goal by the Gophers. 
• Nebraska certainly did not beat themselves today. 
• Brandon Lingen continues to shine at TE. 
• Next weeks off week couldn't come at a better time for Minnesota.
