Right Wing Nut Jobs!

The recent Supreme Court health care decision is really bringing out the nut jobs, here's my Top 10 favorites:
  1. Mike Pence likens the ruling to 9/11.
  2. Tea Party leader hopes the Supreme Court Justices get colon cancer
  3. Justice Roberts sided with the liberal wing due to his epilepsy medication.
  4. Former GOP spokesman calls for armed revolt.
  5. Rush Limbaugh says the court is forever tarnished.
  6. Glenn Beck hints at acceptable use of violence against the left.
  7. Constitutional lawyer Michael Carvin says Justice Roberts should resign
  8. Rand Paul states implies that the Affordable Care Act is still not constitutional.
  9. Ben Shapiro calls ruling the "end of America as we know it".
  10. BuzzFeed found many people who are heading to Canada

Timberwolves Thoughts

  • I was fine with the Chase Budinger trade, I don't think they were going to land anyone at 18 who would have a bigger impact for them than Budinger, he's a proven commodity, he's versatile, he's familiar with head coach Rick Adelman's system, he's still only 24, he's still got plenty of room to grow, he works hard and he's cheap (which will free up cap space to bring in a bigger target).
  • I'm not fine with a proposed Derrick Williams for Pau Gasol trade.  Granted Gasol is the better player right now, and it's not even really very close, but Gasol is 32, he's seen his best days, he's on the downside of his career.  Gasol's contract is also horrendous, he's owed $38 million over the next 2 years. Williams on the other hand is just 21, his best years are still ahead of him, it just seems way too early to give up on him (at least for an aging, overpaid Pau Gasol).
  • I was also okay with the selection of Robbie Hummel in the draft, minus the knee problems he had at Purdue he would have gone in round one.  He finished last year strong and if he continues to progress he could be a solid end of the bench guy who can give some quality minutes when asked.  Let's be honest too, 2nd round draft picks rarely contribute, why play it safe with the pick, why not take a gamble on someone with some upside?

Very informative. We should expect better.  Don't let the GOP take us backwards.

Romney on the Individual Mandate

" Our experience also demonstrates that getting every citizen insured doesn't have to break the bank. First, we established incentives for those who were uninsured to buy insurance. Using tax penalties, as we did, or tax credits, as others have proposed, encourages "free riders" to take responsibility for themselves rather than pass their medical costs on to others. This doesn't cost the government a single dollar. Second, we helped pay for our new program by ending an old one — something government should do more often. The federal government sends an estimated $42 billion to hospitals that care for the poor: Use those funds instead to help the poor buy private insurance, as we did."   -  Mitt Romney

Supreme Court Upholds Obamacare

Surprising decision today from the U.S. Supreme Court, they upheld President Obama's Affordable Care Act.  With a 5-4 conservative edge I thought for sure that they'd overturn the individual mandate but low and behold, Justice Roberts sided with the liberal wing of the court to give them a 5-4 majority.   I am very happy about this decision, I'm a bid fan of it (although I'd prefer a single payer system), so I was very heartened by this decision.  I've got to believe that Justice Roberts was concerned about the legacy of his court as well as it's legitimacy (as they've leaned right on pretty much every major decision since Robert was appointed).  I don't really care about the reasons, I'm just happy they upheld it, the system has been broken for way too long, it was the right thing to do.   It's going to be interesting watching the right wing lunatic reaction to this decision, I'm guessing it will be highly entertaining.

TPSG 2012 NBA Mock Draft 3.0

The NBA Draft is tomorrow, time for a final mock draft, here goes:
  1. New Orlean - Anthony Davis - PF - Kentucky
  2. Charlotte - Thomas Robinson - PF - Kansas
  3. Washington - Bradley Beal - OG - Florida
  4. Cleveland - Michael Kidd Gilchrist - SF - Kentucky
  5. Sacramento - Harrison Barnes - SF - North Carolina
  6. Portland - Damian Lillard - PG - Weber State
  7. Golden State - Andre Drummond - C - Connecticut
  8. Toronto - Dion Waiters - OG - Syracuse
  9. Detroit - John Henson - PF - North Carolina
  10. New Orleans - Austin Rivers - OG - Duke
  11. Portland - Jeremy Lamb - OG - Connecticut
  12. Houston - Meyers Leonard - C - Illinois
  13. Phoenix - Kendall Marshall - PG - North Carolina *****
  14. Milwaukee - Tyler Zeller - C - North Carolina
  15. Philadelphia - Arnett Moultrie - PF - Mississippi State
  16. Houston - Perry Jones - SF/PF - Baylor
  17. Dallas - Terrence Jones - SF - Kentucky
  18. Houston - Terrence Ross - OG - Washington
  19. Orlando - Jared Sullinger - PF - Ohio State
  20. Denver - Moe Harkless - SF - St Johns
  21. Boston - Royce White - F - Iowa State
  22. Boston - Fab Melo - C - Syracuse
  23. Atlanta - Andrew Nicholson - PF - St Bonaventure
  24. Cleveland - Tony Wroten - OG - Washington
  25. Memphis - Will Barton - OG - Memphis
  26. Indiana - Draymond Green - F - Michigan State
  27. Miami - Festus Ezeli - C - Vanderbilt
  28. Oklahoma City - Marquis Teague - PG - Kentucky
  29. Chicago - Quincy Miller - SF - Baylor
  30. Golden State - John Jenkins - OG - Vanderbilt
***** I'm convinced that the Suns will select a guard, which guard remains to be seen.  There's still speculation that they made a draft promise to Dion Waiters that they'd select him if he's available, problem with that is that it's looking very unlikely that he'll still be there.  There's also speculation that the Hornets have made a similar promise to Austin Rivers at number 10 so that would rule him out too. They supposedly like Arnett Moultrie a lot but I just can't see them taking a another big guy here with their need for guard help.  With Steve Nash's future uncertain, a point guard like Kendall Marshall may just be too hard to pass on.  A Jeremy Lamb or Terrence Ross selection wouldn't shock me either.

TPSG 2012 NBA Mock Draft 2.0

  28. Oklahoma City - Marquis Teague - PG - Kentucky
  29. Chicago - Tyshawn Taylor - PG - Kansas
  30. Golden State - John Jenkins - OG - Vanderbilt
***** Word has it that the Suns have promised Dion Waiters that they will select him if he's still available at #13.    They've said that they want to add a wing player so that makes sense.  Of course he could still be gone by #13, if he is I'm guessing they'd hope that Kendall Marshall drops to them.  Austin Rivers would be another possibility.

***** The Timberwolves would like a wing player too, I had them selecting Quincy Miller in my Mock Draft 1.0 and I still wouldn't mind seeing that happen (he is a bit of a risk but his upside is unlimited).  That being said, Terrence Ross would be a much safer pick, if he's still available at #18 I could see them Wolves picking him.  Given that Darko may not be back, it wouldn't shock me to see Tyler Zeller, Andrew Nicholson or Fab Melo go here either (if they keep the pick that is).

Aspirin

Have you heard the latest on aspirin?   Apparently, it can help in the prevention of skin cancer!

A couple months ago it was found to help in the prevention of colon, esophageal, lung & prostate cancers.

It's been known for awhile to help people with heart disease and in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease

It's cheap too, you go down to the dollar store and get 50-100 pills for a buck, do the math, that's less than $10 for a years supply.

I don't know about you but I'm about to start on a daily low dose aspirin regimen.

TPSG 2012 NBA Mock Draft 1.0

  12. Milwaukee - Meyers Leonard - C - Illinois
  13. Phoenix - Austin Rivers - OG - Duke *****
  14. Houston - Perry Jones - PF - Baylor
  15. Philadelphia - Jared Sullinger - PF - Ohio St
  16. Houston - Tyler Zeller - C - North Carolina
  17. Dallas - Dion Waiters - OG - Syracuse
  18. Minnesota - Quincy Miller - SF - Baylor *****
  19. Orlando - Moe Harkless - SF - St Johns
  20. Denver - Terrance Jones - SF - Kentucky
  21. Boston - Royce White - SF - Iowa St

  28. Oklahoma City - Evan Fournier - SF - France
  29. Chicago - Marquis Teague - PG - Kentucky
  30. Golden State - Tony Wroten - OG - Washington
***** So much of what the Suns do this off season will be driven by what happens with Steve Nash.   If he leaves, they will need to find a PG to replace him.  If he stays, they will need to find a PG to groom as his replacement.   I've read that they would also like to improve at the OG spot while they are comfortable with their front court.   All that being said, I suspect they will take the best guard that is available at #13, at this point, I suspect that will be Austin Rivers.

***** I'm not sure that the Timberwolves will keep this pick, it wouldn't surprise me if they included it in a deal to bring in another established starter (think someone like Pau Gasol, Rudy Gay, Kevin Martin, Andre Iguodola or Tyreke Evans) to join their young nucleus (Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio, Derrick Williams, Nikola Pekovik).  That's probably easier said than done though.  If they keep the pick, they need wings (OG's & SF's) and since I suspect that most of the top OG's will be gone, they will probably look at one of the many SF's who will be available.   I like Quincy Miller a lot, I think he's going to be a steal for someone.

You have heard, as I’ve heard, that there’s a battle going on between Cantor and [House Speaker John] Boehner as to whether or not there should be a [highway] bill. . . "The Republican Congress and their nominee for President, Governor Romney, have adopted Europe’s economic policies.  Their economic policy is austerity and unemployment now, and then a long term budget that would explode the debt when the economy recovers so the interest rates would be so high nobody would be able to do anything."

 I tend to concur.
