Hangover 2 .....

......opens today!  I can't wait to see it!  I have high hopes for this one as I thought the original 'Hangover' was probably the funniest movie I've ever seen. Unfortunately, sequels rarely live up to their originals.  We'll see.

**** Update****  FYI, I did see this movie on 06/02/2011.  My original take was correct, it did not live up to the original (what sequel does though?).  Still, I enjoyed it, if you liked the first one I think you'll like the second one.  You just need to go into knowing that it's not breaking new ground, it's basically the same movie as the first one just in a different setting (Thailand).  It actually kind of irks me that people are criticizing it for not being more original, WTF did they expect?

GOP Medicare Plan

It's time I chime in on the GOP Medicare Plan.  First of all, I must say, it sickens me that the GOP wants to fix the deficit problem that they created with their tax cuts for the wealthy by punishing the middle and lower income classes.  Now on to the plan, it's essentially a $15,000/year voucher system for seniors?  That's the plan?  Really.  What if their medical expenses go over that amount you ask (as is apt to happen as you get older)?  Bankruptcy perhaps?  Lack of care?  Go without?  C'mon, let's get real here, is that what we really want for our elderly?  Then to try to sell it to seniors by saying that you won't be effected if you are already 55 and over.  Really?  Do you really think seniors are so short sighted as to sell out the rest of us because they "got theirs"?  Seniors aren't that stupid.  You want a simple solution?  How about lifting the cap on income subject to Medicare taxes beyond the current $106K, that alone will make Medicare fully funded forever (same with Social Security for that matter, raise the cap on income subject to SSI taxes beyond current $106K and SSI is fully-funded forever).  You don't like that idea?   There are lots of smart people who surely can come up with a better idea than a $15,000/year voucher system.  Time to start over GOP and you'd better move fast because this plan is not popular and will surely sink you come election time.

Big Oil Tax Cuts

Riddle me this.  With all of the bitching and moaning we've heard from the GOP and the Tea Baggers since Obama took office regarding the budget deficit & excess spending why are they not all up in arms about corporations that are making record profits continuing to receive tax breaks/subsides?  This is especially disconcerting to me in regards to the tea party, they've been the ones making the most noise about the deficit and preaching about how we need to get back to the laissez faire economic policies that our founders intended, yet they have been remarkable quiet on the issue. Please someone point out to me where in the constitution that this is permitted.  How can anybody take the Tea Party seriously when they exhibit this type of hypocrisy?

    Best of 2010-2011 Television Season

With the 2010-2011 television season coming to an end, I thought that it would be a good time to list my favorite television shows of the 2010-2011 season.
    1. Breaking Bad -  Bryon Cranston, Aaron Paul, easily the best show on TV.
    2. 30 Rock - Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, Tracey Morgan, Jack McBrayer, great show.
    3. Modern Family - consistently funny, great cast.
    4. The Office - still going strong, can they replace Michael Scott next season though?
    5. How I Met Your Mother - love this show, very funny.
    6. Parks & Recreation - this show with it's talented cast is really coming into its own.
    7. Friday Night Lights - great show, unfortunately it's run has come to an end.
    8. CSI - easily the best of the CSI shows.
    9. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - still hilarious, I just wish they had a longer season.
    10. Survivor - this show never get's old.
    11. The Event - IMO, the best new show of the season, unfortunately NBC has cancelled it.
Here's my list for the 2009-2010 television season BTW.

****Edited 07/01/11 to include 'Breaking Bad'****

    2011 NBA Draft Lottery Results

The 2011 NBA Draft Lottery was held tonight.  The results are listed below.  I'm ready for them to abolish this damned thing, the team with the worst record hasn't won the first selection since 2004.  The Timberwolves have now been in the lottery 14 times and they have never won the top spot (or even moved up from their projected position).  How is this helping the worst teams get better?
    1. Cleveland Cavaliers  (from LA Clippers)
    2. Minnesota Timberwolves
    3. Utah Jazz  (from New Jersey)
    4. Cleveland Cavaliers
    5. Toronto Raptors
    6. Washington Wizards
    7. Sacramento Kings
    8. Detroit Pistons
    9. Charlotte Bobcats
    10. Milwaukee Bucks
    11. Golden State Warriors
    12. Utah Jazz
    13. Phoenix Suns
    14. Houston Rockets
Here's an interesting quote from Timberwolve GM David Kahn, I wonder if he'll get fined for it:

This league has a habit, and I am just going to say habit, of producing some pretty incredible story lines. Last year it was Abe Pollin's widow and this year it was a 14-year-old boy and the only thing we have in common is we have both been bar mitzvahed. -- Wolves general manager David Kahn

Anyways, I'm projecting that the Cavs will select Duke PG Kyrie Irving with the number 1 pick.  I'm not sure who the Twolves will select just yet (if they don't trade the pick), although at this point it wouldn't surprise me if they select either Arizona F Derek Williams, Kentucky PF/C Enes Kanter or Congo PF/C Bismack Biyombo.

    GOP Presidential hopefuls

It's been slow go for potential 2012 GOP Presidential contenders to throw their hat into the ring.  I'm not quite sure what the hold up is, with the economy still struggling along, with the impressive wins by the GOP last fall and with the momentum gained from the the 'tea party' you'd think that candidates would be lining up for a chance to run.  Perhaps they feel that 2016 is a safer bet, I don't know.  Anyways, it's not a very impressive list thus far.

    IN:
Newt Gingrich - his 3 marriages will turn away the morals group, his rhetoric will turn away moderates
Ron Paul - some tea party support, little GOP support, probably too libertarian for most in the GOP
Gary Johnson - who? nobody knows him, no chance.

    UNDECIDED:
Mitt Romney - I don't see him overcoming his MA healthcare plan.
Tim Pawlenty - probably the fewest negatives of all the candidates but he doesn't excite many either
John Huntsman - he may be hurt by his connections to the Obama administration
Mitch Daniels - he may be hurt by his connections to the GWB administration
Sarah Palin - high negatives outside of the far right, grasp of issues still lacking
Michelle Bachmann - tea party favorite, nobody else's favorite, not the sharpest tool in the shed.
Rick Santorum - may try to carry the 'morals' wing of the party
Herman Cain - let get serious, an African American will not win the GOP primary's

    OUT:
Haley Barbour - claims he doesn't have the desire
Mike Huckabee - also claims he doesn't have the desire
Donald Trump - his high negatives doomed him.
    Chris Christie - I'm guessing he's aiming for 2016
Jeb Bush -too soon for another Bush IMO
Jim DeMint - little support outside of the tea party
Bobby Jindal - the GOP seems to have cooled on him
Mike Pence - seems more interested in the Indiana Governors office
Marco Rubio - needs some experience, look for a 2016 run
John Thune - not yet, perhaps 2016 for him too
Scott Brown - too moderate to get through the primaries

In the end, unless a surprise candidate emerges (Chris Christie, Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush) I would expect the grown ups in the party to move to the forefront and I'd put my money on either Pawlenty or Huntsman (and then on Obama to knock off either).

Sean Avery Tweet on Gay Marriage

Sean Avery of the NY Rangers really is taking a lot of heat for his recent tweet supporting gay marriage.  There are still lots of homophobes out there I guess.  I happen to agree with Avery, if two people love each other and want to get married whose business is it anyways what sex they are?   To each their own is my philosophy.  It doesn't affect me in any way.   Lighten up people!.

    From Surplus to Debt

Lori Montgomery of the Washington Post wrote an excellent article this past weekend detailing how we went from a surplus to the current debt we are now looking at.  Not so surprisingly she puts much of the blame squarely on GWB and the GOP.  Of course the GOP and the Tea Party have short term memories as far as the debt is concerned, it's much easier to just blame it all on Obama isn't it?  Anyways, here are a few highlights, give it a read if you have time:

"In January 2001, with the budget balanced and clear sailing ahead, the Congressional Budget Office forecast ever-larger annual surpluses indefinitely. The outlook was so rosy, the CBO said, that Washington would have enough money by the end of the decade to pay off everything it owed."
"Voices of caution were swept aside in the rush to take advantage of the apparent bounty. Political leaders chose to cut taxes, jack up spending and, for the first time in U.S. history, wage two wars solely with borrowed funds. “In the end, the floodgates opened.”
Now, instead of tending a nest egg of more than $2 trillion, the federal government expects to owe more than $10 trillion to outside investors by the end of this year. The national debt is larger, as a percentage of the economy, than at any time in U.S. history except for the period shortly after World War II."
"Polls show that a large majority of Americans blame wasteful or unnecessary federal programs for the nation’s budget problems. But routine increases in defense and domestic spending account for only about 15 percent of the financial deterioration, according to a new analysis of CBO data."
"The biggest culprit, by far, has been an erosion of tax revenue triggered largely by two recessions and multiple rounds of tax cuts. Together, the economy and the tax bills enacted under former president George W. Bush, and to a lesser extent by President Obama, wiped out $6.3 trillion in anticipated revenue. That’s nearly half of the $12.7 trillion swing from projected surpluses to real debt. Federal tax collections now stand at their lowest level as a percentage of the economy in 60 years."
"Big-ticket spending initiated by the Bush administration accounts for 12 percent of the shift. The Iraq and Afghanistan wars have added $1.3 trillion in new borrowing. A new prescription drug benefit for Medicare recipients contributed another $272 billion. The Troubled Assets Relief Program bank bailout, which infuriated voters and led to the defeat of several legislators in 2010, added just $16 billion — and TARP may eventually cost nothing as financial institutions repay the Treasury.
Obama’s 2009 economic stimulus, a favorite target of Republicans who blame Democrats for the mounting debt, has added $719 billion — 6 percent of the total shift, according to the new analysis of CBO data by the nonprofit Pew Fiscal Analysis Initiative. All told, Obama-era choices account for about $1.7 trillion in new debt, according to a separate Washington Post analysis of CBO data over the past decade. Bush-era policies, meanwhile, account for more than $7 trillion and are a major contributor to the trillion-dollar annual budget deficits that are dominating the political debate."
"Most Republicans reject raising taxes as part of the solution; House Speaker John A. Boehner (Ohio) has called it a “non-starter.” But Democrats won’t go for a proposal based solely on spending cuts. The“Gang of Six,” a bipartisan Senate group dedicated to debt reduction, is expected to unveil a strategy as soon as this week that couples sharp spending cuts with a rewrite of the tax code that would raise additional revenue."

    Osama Bin Laden Dead!

I hate to cheer the death of anyone but I have to admit that the death of Osama Bin Laden doesn't bother me in the least, I'm actually quite happy about it.  Karma's a bitch, he got what was coming.  I was heartened by the spontaneous patriotic celebrations that broke out in Washington, New York and across the country, that was nice to see.  Props to President Obama, the U.S. Intelligence community and the U.S. military on finally tracking down and killing this P.O.S.
