Salt River Fields

I made my first visit to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick last week.  All I can say is WOW.  What a beautiful facility, I have got to believe that it is the nicest spring training site in all of baseball (although admittedly I haven't been to all of them).  Given that Talking Stick Resort is right next door I would think this would be a must visit for all Colorado Rockie fans (and San Fransisco Giants fans too for that matter as Scottsdale Stadium is just a short trip away).  The Cubs are also getting a new stadium not far away (Hohokam Stadium is not far away either).  With the proximity of so many teams to each other (15 teams in the Phoenix metro area), I can't believe too many players or fans would prefer the Grapefruit League to the Cactus League.  I only wish the Twins would make the move out west.

TPSG NFL Mock Draft 2.0

With the NFLPA decertifying and the owners locking out the players it appears that the only thing NFL fans may have to look forward to for quite some time will be the NFL Draft on April 28-30, so it's time for the TPSG NFL Mock Draft 2.0.  Rumblings seem to be pointing towards Ron Rivera and the Panthers looking to find a franchise QB with the first pick, that being the case it comes down to Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton, IMO Gabbert is a much safer pick (although Newton may have more upside) so I predict he will wind up in Carolina.  The rumblings I've been hearing about the Cardinals is that they will likely bypass a QB in round one and look to obtain a veteran QB (maybe Kolb, McNabb, Bulger or Palmer).  That being the case, Von Miller is the logical pick for them at number 5, he'd be the perfect fit for their defense.  I think the Vikings will either select a QB or trade down and maybe grab an OL (Mike Pouncey?).  Not a whole lot of other changes from my TPSG Mock Draft 1.0, that will probably change as we get closer to draft day though. So here goes:
  1. Carolina Panthers -  Blaine Gabbert - QB - Missouri
  2. Denver Broncos - Da'Quan Bowers - DE - Clemson
  3. Buffalo Bills - Cam Newton - QB - Auburn
  4. Cincinnati Bengals - A.J. Green - WR - Georgia
  5. Arizona Cardinals - Von Miller - LB - Texas A&M
  6. Cleveland Browns - Marcell Dareus - DT - Alabama
  7. San Fransisco 49ers - Patrick Peterson - CB - LSU
  8. Tennessee Titans - Nick Fairley - DT - Auburn
  9. Dallas Cowboys - Prince Amukamara - CB - Nebraska
  10. Washington Redskins - Julio Jones - WR - Alabama
  11. Houston Texans - Robert Quinn - OLB - North Carolina
  12. Minnesota Vikings - Ryan Mallett - QB - Arkansas
  13. Detroit Lions - Nate Solder - OT - Colorado
  14. St Louis Rams - Corey Liuget - DT - Illinois
  15. Miami Dolphins - Anthony Castonzo - OT - Boston College
  16. Jacksonville Jaguars - Ryan Kerrigan - DE - Purdue
  17. New England Patriots - Cameron Jordan - DE - California
  18. San Diego Chargers - Aldon Smith - DE/OLB - Missouri
  19. New York Giants - Tyron Smith - OT - USC
  20. Tampa Bay Buccaners - Adrian Clayborn - DE - Iowa
  21. Kansas City Chiefs - Muhammed Wilkerson - DT - Temple

    Sahara Hotel & Casino Closing

Say it isn't so, the Sahara Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas is closing.  Don't get me wrong, it was a bit old, a bit run down, certainly not the newest or fanciest place on the strip, but damn, I liked it.  I stayed there many times, I never had any problems, they had decent rooms, low minimum tables, a nice pool area, a decent buffet and most importantly affordable rooms.  I really hate to see it go, there will now be one less affordable mid-level hotel in Las Vegas to choose from.  RIP Sahara Hotel & Casino.

    March Madness has arrived!

March Madness is here!!!!  I love March Madness, it's one of my favorite time of the year.  Ohio St, Kansas, Duke and Pitt get the 4 number one seeds.  The bracket can be found here.  First round games in the new extended format start on Tuesday.  As far as I'm concerned they should just let everybody in, it would only mean adding another couple of games, then nobody can complain about being left out.  My prediction on teams to watch:  Purdue, St John's & Cincinnati.   My Cinderella prediction:  Bucknell & Belmont.

    U.S. Unemployment Rate

Albeit slowly, there are signs of improvement in the U.S. unemployment rate.  I tend to think it'd be wise to tread carefully before enacting many of the proposed GOP budget cuts, they are incredibly shortsighted and simply would not help.  The GOP really should heed the latest polls, which show the public is still most concerned with jobs, it just does not make sense to cut in areas that do create jobs just for the sake of ideology.

Amazing video of the Japanese Tsunami.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan.

    Russell Crowe

I just finished watching 'The Next Three Days' starring Russell Crowe on DVD, very good movie, I enjoyed it a lot, lots of action, lots of suspense, it moved very fast.  Well done Russell Crowe.  I like most Russell Crowe movies, he doesn't put out many stinkers (although, I hear 'Robin Hood' wasn't too good).  Anyways, here's my list of the Top 10 Russell Crowe movies:
    1. Gladiator - 2000
    2. A Beautiful Mind - 2001
    3. The Insider - 1999
    4. Body of Lies - 2008
    5. Mystery, Alaska - 1999
    6. The Next Three Days - 2010
    7. American Gangster - 2007
    8. State of Play - 2009
    9. Cinderella Man - 2005
    10. 3:10 to Yuma - 2007

      TPSG NFL Mock Draft 1.0

NFL Mock draft time! There's really not a clear cut number 1 pick at this point, it could be any of 4-5 players, right now I'm guessing Da'Quan Bowers as the Panthers really need to upgrade their edge pass rush. I also see 3 QB's going in the top 12, that could also easily change, the Cardinals and/or Vikings could easily pass on a QB in round 1 and hope that a QB like Christian Ponder-Florida St, Colin Kaepernick-Nevada, Jake Locker-Washington or Andy Dalton-TCU is still available in round #2.  Anyways, here goes:
      1. Carolina Panthers - Da'Quan Bowers - DE - Clemson
      2. Denver Broncos - Patrick Peterson - CB - LSU
      3. Buffalo Bills - Cam Newton - QB - Auburn
      4. Cincinnati Bengals - A.J. Green - WR - Georgia
      5. Arizona Cardinals - Blaine Gabbert - QB - Missouri

      11. Houston Texans - Robert Quinn - OLB - North Carolina
