Cardinals Draft Brandon Williams

The Cardinals selected Texas A&M CB Brandon Williams in round 3 (number 93 overall) of the NFL Draft tonight.  He played RB for 3 years at Texas A&M before being converted to CB.  He appears to be a heckuva athlete and I'm assuming will be put to work on special teams pronto.   He's raw at CB though, it may take him some time to contribute there.  I'll qualify him as a work in progress with big potential.  Steve Keim has been solid in round 3 so I'm optimistic!

Vikings Draft Mackensie Alexander

The Vikings selected Clemson CB Mackensie Alexander in round 2 (54th overall pick) of the NFL Draft tonight.  I'm assuming that this was a case of BPA as CB is not a pressing need for the Vikings.  Regardless, I like the pick, this guy has first round talent and the Vikings got him late in round 2.  It sounds like his stock dropped some due to his cockiness, but IMO that's a great trait to have as an NFL CB, especially if you can back it up.

Cardinals Draft Robert Nkemdiche

The Cardinals used their first round draft pick (number 29 overall) tonight on Mississippi DT Robert Nkemdiche.  He was projected as a top 5 pick at one point, he's great value at the 29th pick.   Freakish talent with a few red flags.  Arizona may be a perfect landing spot for him, they have a great locker room and lots of leadership to help develop him.  He can play some fullback too!

Vikings Draft Laquon Treadwell

The Vikings used their first round draft pick (number 23 overall) tonight on Mississippi WR Laquon Treadwell.  He fills a need for a big, physical WR for the Vikings, don't overlook his blocking ability either given that they have a RB like Adrian Peterson carrying the ball. Nice addition.

NFL Draft Thoughts

The 2016 NFL Draft starts today and runs through Saturday.  I absolutely love the draft!  I couldn't be more excited!  It really is heaven for football fans.  Here are a few thoughts as we head into day 1.

Suns Hire Earl Watson

The Phoenix Suns hired Earl Watson as their new head coach yesterday.  Not to disparage Watson, he may turn out to be a heckuva a coach, but honestly this move really doesn't inspire to run out and buy season tickets.  Perhaps I just got my hopes up too much when I heard Jay Wright's name being bandied about.  It's also a bit troublesome that from all reports, they didn't even interview anyone else.  What would it have hurt to reach out to a few top names, it would at least give the impression that Watson was the best choice among many talented candidates when he got the job.  The franchise has been mired in mediocrity lately and I'm not sure this move will move the needle much.  I'm guessing they were at the low end of the totem pole among vacancies though, so perhaps Earl Watson really is the best they could do.  Anyways, I hope I'm wrong, I'll be pulling for him to succeed.  At little luck at the draft lottery would be nice too.

2016 TPSG NFL Mock Draft 5.0

The Tennessee Titans have traded the top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft to the Los Angeles Rams.  The Titans got a pretty big haul for that pick, props to them.  It does shake up my my mock draft though, so here's an update:
  1. Los Angeles Rams - Jared Goff - QB - California
  2. Cleveland Browns - Carson Wentz - QB - North Dakota State
  3. San Diego Chargers - Jalen Ramsey - CB - Florida State
  4. Dallas Cowboys - Joey Bosa - DE - Ohio State
  5. Jacksonville Jaguars - Myles Jack - OLB - UCLA
  6. Baltimore Ravens - Laremy Tunsil - OT - Mississippi
  7. San Francisco 49ers - Deforest Buckner - DE - Oregon
  8. Philadelphia Eagles - Ezekiel Elliott - RB - Ohio State
  9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Vernon Hargreaves - CB - Florida
  10. New York Giants - Ronnie Stanley - OT - Notre Dame
  11. Chicago Bears -  Jarran Reed - DT - Alabama
  12. New Orleans Saints - Sheldon Rankins - DT - Louisville
  13. Miami Dolphins - Shaq Lawson - DE - Clemson
  14. Oakland Raiders - William Jackson III - CB - Houston
  15. Tennessee Titans - Jack Conklin - OT - Michigan State
  16. Detroit Lions - Laquon Treadwell - WR - Mississippi
  17. Atlanta Falcons - Reggie Ragland - LB - Alabama
  18. Indianapolis Colts - Taylor Decker - OT - Ohio State
  19. Buffalo Bills - Robert Nkemdiche - DT - Mississippi
  20. New York Jets - Paxton Lynch - QB - Memphis
  21. Washington Redskins - Eli Apple - CB - Ohio State
  22. Houston Texans - Will Fuller - WR - Notre Dame
  23. Minnesota Vikings -  Josh Doctson - WR - TCU
  24. Cincinnati Bengals - Corey Coleman - WR - Baylor
  25. Pittsburgh Steelers - Artie Burns - CB - Miami
  26. Seattle Seahawks - Jason Spriggs - OT - Indiana
  27. Green Bay Packers - Andrew Billings - DT - Baylor
  28. Kansas City Chiefs - Mackensie Alexander - CB - Clemson
  29. Arizona Cardinals - Ryan Kelly - C - Alabama
  30. Carolina Panthers - Kevin Dodd - DE - Clemson
  31. Denver Broncos - Chris Jones - DT - Mississippi State
I suspect that there will be QB's taken at both the top spots of this years draft, the only question is if it's the Browns making one of those picks.  I'm thinking they'd like to trade down.  Personally, if I'm them, I keep the pick and take one of the QB's.  Laremy Tunsil looks like the biggest loser of that Titans/Rams trade, a fall from top pick to number 6 pick will cost him considerably.

It still sounds like the Vikings are leaning towards WR and if that's the case a bigger target seems to make the most sense, that means Josh Doctson or Laquon Treadwell in round 1.   If neither is available, I'm guessing they go BPA and I wouldn't be surprised if BPA means defense (i.e. Andrew Billings, Darron Lee, Leonard Floyd?).

I'm hearing a lot of heat around Ryan Kelly to the Arizona Cardinals, they reportedly really like him and he'd be a great fit for them, if he's available at the spot I think they take him.  That is, unless Paxton Lynch falls to them (which is more of a possibility after that Rams/Titans trade).  I wouldn't rule out a CB here either, or a pass rusher like Noah Spence.

For the record, the hardest guys for me to mock (i.e. first round talents, but no good fits) were Darron Lee, Leonard Floyd, Noah Spence & A'Shawn Robinson.  Any team being able to select one of these guys in round 2 will be getting very good value.

Top 10 Basketball Players of All Time

Now that Kobe Bryant is officially retired, I thought it would be interesting to rank him with the best players of all time. Here's how I would rank the Top 10:
  1. Michael Jordan
  2. Wilt Chamberlain
  3. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
  4. Larry Bird
  5. Magic Johnson
  6. Oscar Robertson
  7. Kobe Bryant
  8. LeBron James
  9. Bill Russell
  10. Tim Duncan
It's really a pretty fine line between most of these guys.  I ranked Michael Jordan first because I just feel that he had a way of taking over and dominating a game like no one else.  Wilt Chamberlain once scored 100 points in a game, need I say more?  Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was probably the most well rounded center to ever play the game.  Larry Bird did the most with the least, he wasn't supremely athletic but his shot was deadly and he had a very unique feel for the game.  Magic Johnson was a freak of nature, a 6'9" point guard who could also play center if needed.  Oscar Robertson was nearly unstoppable.  Kobe Bryant is perhaps the most athletic player on this list, deadly offense, very good on defense, his inability to get along with his teammates keeps him from being ranked higher.  LeBron James reminds me a lot of Magic Johnson, he's a unique talent and who could still move higher on this list when all is said and done.  Bill Russell is perhaps the best defensive player of all time.  Tim Duncan wasn't flashy but his game is flawless, he makes things look so easy.

Money in Politics

"The end of democracy and the defeat of the American Revolution will occur when the government falls into the hands of lending institutions and moneyed incorporations."  - Thomas Jefferson

"The day will come when our Republic will be an impossibility because wealth will be concentrated in the hands of a few.  When that day comes, we must rely upon the wisdom of the best elements in the country to readjust the laws of the country."  - James Madison

"Government is instituted for the common good: for the protection, safety, prosperity  and the happiness of the people and not for the profit, honor or private interest of any one man, family or class of men."  - John Adams

"The power of all corporations ought to be limited, . . . the growing wealth acquired by them never fails to be the source of abuses."  - James Madison

"The millionaire class and the billionaire class increasingly own the political process, and they own the politicians that go to them for money. . . we are moving very, very quickly from a democratic society, one person, one vote to an oligarchic form of society, where billionaires would be determining who the elected officials of this country are."  - Bernie Sanders

"There is no question in the world that money has control."  - Barry Goldwater

"When these political action committees give money, they expect something in return other than good government. . . Poor people don't make political contributions.  You might get a different result if there were a poor PAC up here."  - Bob Dole

"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies." - Thomas Jefferson

"History records that the money changers have used every form of abuse, intrigue, deceit, and violent means possible to maintain their control over governments by controlling money and it's issuance."  - James Madison

2016 TPSG NFL Mock Draft 4.0

The 2016 NFL Draft is just three weeks away.  It seems like a good time to update my mock draft.  So here goes:
  1. Tennessee Titans - Laremy Tunsil - OT - Mississippi
  2. Cleveland Browns - Carson Wentz - QB - North Dakota State
  3. San Diego Chargers - Jalen Ramsey - CB - Florida State
  4. Dallas Cowboys - Joey Bosa - DE - Ohio State
  5. Jacksonville Jaguars - Myles Jack - OLB - UCLA
  6. Baltimore Ravens - Deforest Buckner - DE - Oregon
  7. San Francisco 49ers - Jared Goff - QB - California
  8. Philadelphia Eagles - Ezekiel Elliott - RB - Ohio State
  9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Vernon Hargreaves - CB - Florida
  10. New York Giants - Ronnie Stanley - OT - Notre Dame
  11. Chicago Bears - A'Shawn Robinson - DT - Alabama
  12. New Orleans Saints - Shaq Lawson - DE - Clemson
  13. Miami Dolphins - Eli Apple - CB - Ohio State
  14. Oakland Raiders - Mackensie Alexander - CB - Clemson
  15. Los Angeles Rams - Paxton Lynch - QB - Memphis State
  16. Detroit Lions - Jack Conklin - OT - Michigan State
  17. Atlanta Falcons - Reggie Ragland - LB - Alabama
  18. Indianapolis Colts - Taylor Decker - OT - Ohio State
  19. Buffalo Bills - Robert Nkemdiche - DT - Mississippi
  20. New York Jets - Noah Spence - DE - Easter Kentucky
  21. Washington Redskins - Andrew Billings - DT - Baylor
  22. Houston Texans - Corey Coleman - WR - Baylor
  23. Minnesota Vikings -  Josh Doctson - WR - TCU
  24. Cincinnati Bengals - Will Fuller - WR - Notre Dame
  25. Pittsburgh Steelers - William Jackson III - CB - Houston
  26. Seattle Seahawks - Sheldon Rankins - DT - Louisville
  27. Green Bay Packers - Jarran Reed - DT - Alabama
  28. Kansas City Chiefs - Kevin Dodd - DE - Clemson
  29. Arizona Cardinals - Ryan Kelly - C - Alabama
  30. Carolina Panthers - Jason Spriggs - OT - Indiana
  31. Denver Broncos - Chris Jones - DT - Mississippi State
Laremy Tunsil is still looking like a lock for the top spot.  It just makes too much sense, they have to find a way to keep Marcus Mariota healthy and no one else has really emerged to enough to entice a team to trade up to that top spot.

Josh Doctson seems to be the most logical pick for the Vikings, they really need to add some talent at the WR spot and Doctson's skill set seems to be the best fit for the Vikings.  All that being said, Mike Zimmer is a defensive coach at heart and the chance to add a DT like Sheldon Rankins, Robert Nkemdiche, Andrew Billings or Jarran Reed may be too much for them to pass up on.

Ryan Kelly makes a lot of sense for the Cardinals, they really need an upgrade at the Center spot and Kelly could probably start from day 1.  If Paxton Lynch were to fall to them though, I can't see them passing on him.  If drafting on a BPA basis, I could also see them take a long look at Darron Lee, Laquon Treadwell and Leonard Floyd.
