I don't agree with everything Michael Bloomberg does but I do give him high marks for his gun control crusade. This commercial is great, it's simple, to the point and IMO highly effective.

Possible Tubby Smith Replacements

So who replaces Tubby Smith as head basketball coach at Minnesota?  I've got a few thoughts.

Here's 10 names to keep an eye on (in my order of preference):
  1. Shaka Smart - Smart is the current head coach at VCU, he was hired at VCU by current Gopher Athletic Director Norwood Teague, they reportedly have a very strong relationship.  It would seem to me that Shaka would be wise to move on to a bigger stage while he's still a hot property.  I have to suspect that he's on the top of the wish list of the majority of Minnesota fans. UCLA may be a better fit for him but stranger things have happened.
  2. Brad Stevens - current head coach at Butler, he has Villa 7 ties. Stevens along with Smart are probably the two best young coaches in all of college basketball.  I'm guessing Stevens waits until one of the elite programs has an opening (UCLA?).  He's a longshot for Minnesota but a guy can dream can't he?
  3. Flip Saunders - Gopher alum, former NBA head coach.  Flip makes so much sense I kind of wish they'd just pull the trigger on him and get it done with.  He's got lots of local ties, he's a big name, the fan base would be excited, the recruits would surely be lining up to play for a coach who knows what it takes to get them to the NBA.  His only downside would be his lack of major college coaching experience.
  4. Buzz Williams - current head coach at Marquette, he has Villa 7 ties.  With Williams and the Marquette athletic director supposedly having a strained relationship there is a window open for Teague to exploit.  Williams is a solid coach, he'd be a great hire.
  5. Gregg Marshall - current head coach at Wichita State.  Marshall has had a lot of success at Wichita State and it may be time for him to take his act to a bigger stage (such as the Big Ten).  He may not be a big name but he'd be a solid choice.
  6. Andy Enfield - current coach at Florida Gulf Coast University.  How can you watch the NCAA tournament this year and not be impressed with what Enfield has done at FGCU, they are a really fun team to watch and Enfield has really emerged as a hot commodity.
  7. Anthony Grant - current head coach at Alabama, he has Villa 7 ties. Grant was once hired by Teague at VCU, they reportedly still have a strong relationship. Grant has done a great job of recruiting at Alabama, it hasn't really translated into a strong NCAA run yet though.
  8. Chris Mooney - current head coach at Richmond, he also has Villa 7 ties. Mooney was a very hot name a couple year ago, some of that steam has wore off some but he's still a solid young coach.
  9. Eric Musselman - current Assistant Coach at Arizona State, former NBA head coach.  I like him, he's done a nice job at Arizona State and his NBA experience could certainly sway some recruits.  I'm guessing it they went this direction though, Flip would get first shot.
  10. Ben Howland - former head coach at UCLA & Pitt.  He's a very experienced and very successful NCAA coach, those guys don't become available all that often, they'd be foolish to not at least kick the tires.
If I was a betting man (ok, I am a betting man), I'd put my money on Shaka Smart getting the job.

Don't bet on:  Fred Hoiberg, Josh Pastner, Tim Miles, Jay Wright

Whoever it is, I am very confident that Norwood Teague will bring in the right guy, he's very well connected in the basketball community and he's got a solid track record of hiring coaches.  I wouldn't be surprised if this is wrapped up by the end of the week.

Gophers Fire Tubby Smith

Minnesota fired Tubby Smith on Monday.  I kind of saw it coming, Tubby has been a bit of a disappointment since coming over from Kentucky 6 years ago.  From my outsiders perspective it just seemed like Tubby was on cruise control and that the program had stagnated, I personally think it was the right call, it was time for a change.  I know some of the national basketball pundits won't like this move, Tubby has a great track record (124-81 at Minnesota; a national championship at Kentucky), he runs a clean program and he's reportedly a real class act, but the fact is he was getting paid a lot of money and he just wasn't earning it.  I also think those pundits are doing a lazy bit of analysis, they see 20+ wins, an NCAA bid and first round win and think that should be enough for Tubby to keep his job, but that's not really the whole story.  Looking a bit closer and you see a 46-62 Big Ten record, you see that's he never finished higher than 6th place in the conference, you see a rather mediocre recruiter, you see a number of players transferring away (Justin Cobbs, Royce White, Colton Iverson to name a few), you don't see any of his Minnesota players in the NBA (high school recruits notice this), you don't see one first team All B1G performer, you don't see a great deal of improvement in his players (see Ralph Sampson III & Rodney Williams are 2 prime examples), you do see him throwing his players under the bus rather than blaming himself, you do see a rather questionable rotation of players in games, you do see assistant coaches who aren't pulling their weight (Saul Smith I'm talking about you), you do see his teams struggling down the stretch year after year, and finally you also do see diminishing fan support.  Bottom line, why shouldn't the program aspire to more?

Time For Herb Sendek To Go?

As I sit here watching the NCAA tournament I can't help but turn my attention to the state of the basketball program at Arizona State University.  Herb Sendek has been the head basketball coach at Arizona State for 7 years now and he has taken them to a total of 1 NCAA tournament appearance (in 2009).  Outside of that run, they have been, well, not terrible, but really quite mediocre.  Herb seeems like a nice guy and he knows the x's and o's of the game but he's far from a magnetic personality, he really hasn't inspired much confidence in anyone, from the fan base, to the players and most importantly to prospective recruits.  ASU AD Steve Patterson needs to take a stand and expect more out of the program.  He's got an easy out too, there's a pretty good candidate on campus already, his name is Eric Musselman.  Musselman has coached basketball at nearly every level that there is, he's been credited with much of the improvement in the ASU program over the past year, nobody would work harder, and don't think for a second that prospective recruits wouldn't want to play for a coach who knows what it would take to get them to the NBA.  If ASU wants to make that move they'd better do it soon too, Mussleman may be a hot commodity in short order.  Maybe he could bring Russ Pennell in as an assistant coach too.  I personally feel that it's time for a change and I'd applaud that swap of coaches (Musselman for Sendek).

Silver Linings Playbook

"Silver Linings Playbook" - starring Bradley Cooper & Jennifer Lawrence.  I finally saw this movie!  I liked it, a lot, I can see why is it was so critically acclaimed.  It stars Bradley Cooper as Pat Solitano, a trouble man who moves back in with his parents after a court ordered stint in a mental institution where he was sent to deal with his bi-polar issues.  He's determined to get his life back in order and to reconcile with his ex-wife, those ambitions get a bit complicated though when he meets a girl named Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence).  Tiffany it turns out is fighting a few demons of her own.  Great performances by Cooper and Lawrence (her Academy Award win was well deserved).  Robert DeNiro also did a great job as Pat's father, who coincidently has a few OCD issues himself.  I highly recommend, give it a watch.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars (*****).

Vikings Trade Percy Harvin

The Vikings traded Percy Harvin to the Seahawks yesterday.  I have mixed feelings on this move.

On one hand, it pisses me off to no end that it came to this, Percy Harvin is an incredibly dynamic game changing WR, he will not be easily replaced.  He was playing at an MVP level through the first half of the season before his injury, it would have been nice to see him and Adrian Peterson both at full speed again.  It would seem to me that this was a prime opportunity for Leslie Frazier to earn his stripes as a a head coach and work things out with Harvin.

On the other hand, I can also understand the Vikings thinking, he had become more trouble than he was worth and given his history, I'm guessing that things wouldn't change anytime soon.  Tying up $11-12+ million a year on a malcontent with a history of injury problems was probably not the best way to move forward.  Getting a first, a third and a seventh round draft pick for him is probably better than they could have expected.

Now what though for the Vikings at WR?  How do they fill the void?  Their top returning WR is Jarius Wright, he had 22 catches for 310 yards in his rookie year.  No other WR on the roster has as many catches or yards.  That's a scary thought.

I suspect that they try to bring in a top WR or 2 via free agency and they'll have plenty of money to spend.  There have been some rumors that they have an interest in Mike Wallace from the Steelers, I suspect that he winds up in Miami though.  I'm guessing they'd have a better shot at Greg Jennings.  They may want to take a flyer on Danario Alexander too.  Wes Welker or Danny Amendola could be in play too if Jennings and Wallace fall through.

I also have to suspect that they will draft a WR with one of their now 2 first round draft picks.  Tavon Austin would be a nice replacement for Harvin.  Robert Woods or DeAndre Hopkins could also be in play at the end of round one.  Keenan Allen may be available too but he's got some red flags popping up.

The Master

"The Master" - starring Joaquin Phoenix & Philip Seymour Hoffman.  Not good.  Not good at all.  Save yourself 2+ hours and skip this one.  It's supposedly about the early years of Scientology.  It's follows a troubled WWII vet named Freddie Quell (Phoenix) who stumbles into the "new religion" and it's charismatic leader Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman) after a drunken binge.  As he searches for meaning to his life Quell becomes Hoffman's right hand man, he eventually begins to question the teachings and methods of this new religion though.  It's just a long, slow moving, meandering, dreary mess.  I can't think of many redeeming qualities. Phoenix does a nice job as Quell, but even he couldn't save this mess.

I'll give it 1 star out of 5 (*****).  You've been warned.

Beasts of the Southern Wild

"Beasts of the Southern Wild" - starring Quvenzhane Wallis & Dwight Henry.  I'm not sure how to describe this one, maybe "Winter's Bone" meets "Where the Wild Things Are".  Wallis stars as Hushpuppy, a young girl who lives with her dying, short tempered father in the poverty stricken area of the Mississippi Delta.  After a natural disaster hits, they, and other members of their community, struggle to overcome the elements.  Hushpuppy must also come to grips with her father's terminal illness.  It's a pretty powerful movie, it mixes in some great imagery, more than a few strong visual metaphors, along with some touching scenes, some poignant allusions to Katrina, global warming, and the power of the human spirit.  Wallis did a wonderful job as Hushpuppy, she certainly deserved her Oscar nomination. I was pleasantly surprised with this movie, give it a watch.

I will give it 4 out of 5 stars (*****).

Taken 2

"Taken 2" - starring Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen.  I finally caught this flick on DVD, it's really not much different from the original.  In this one, retired Special Ops agent Bryan Mills (Neeson) and his ex-wife (Janssen) are kidnapped while in Istanbul.  The kidnappers are seeking revenge on Mills for his killings of his daughter's kidnappers (in the original).  Mills must then use his special forces skills to free himself, then his ex-wife.  It moved pretty fast and there are plenty of great action scenes involved.  Neeson does a nice job in his scenes, he really kicks some Turkish ass.  It wasn't quite as good as the original but I think if you liked the first one you'd probably like this one too, you just need to suspend disbelief a bit at times.

I'll give it 3 out of 5 stars (*****).
