"Beasts of the Southern Wild" - starring Quvenzhane Wallis & Dwight Henry. I'm not sure how to describe this one, maybe "Winter's Bone" meets "Where the Wild Things Are". Wallis stars as Hushpuppy, a young girl who lives with her dying, short tempered father in the poverty stricken area of the Mississippi Delta. After a natural disaster hits, they, and other members of their community, struggle to overcome the elements. Hushpuppy must also come to grips with her father's terminal illness. It's a pretty powerful movie, it mixes in some great imagery, more than a few strong visual metaphors, along with some
touching scenes, some poignant allusions to Katrina, global
warming, and the power of the human spirit. Wallis did a wonderful job as Hushpuppy, she certainly deserved her Oscar nomination. I was pleasantly surprised with this movie, give it a watch.
I will give it 4 out of 5 stars (*****).
