The Master

"The Master" - starring Joaquin Phoenix & Philip Seymour Hoffman.  Not good.  Not good at all.  Save yourself 2+ hours and skip this one.  It's supposedly about the early years of Scientology.  It's follows a troubled WWII vet named Freddie Quell (Phoenix) who stumbles into the "new religion" and it's charismatic leader Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman) after a drunken binge.  As he searches for meaning to his life Quell becomes Hoffman's right hand man, he eventually begins to question the teachings and methods of this new religion though.  It's just a long, slow moving, meandering, dreary mess.  I can't think of many redeeming qualities. Phoenix does a nice job as Quell, but even he couldn't save this mess.

I'll give it 1 star out of 5 (*****).  You've been warned.
