The Sun Devils really didn't come out to play last night and it showed in their 37-23 loss to Texas Tech. That seems rather common in many of these meaningless bowl game though doesn't it? One team comes in a bit upset that they didn't get to a better bowl game and gives a half-assed effort (Arizona State) and the other team comes in trying to prove that they are better than their record indicates and are out to prove something (Texas Tech). I'd be all in favor of scraping these bowl games and moving to a bigger playoff system that incorporates the bowl games into the playoffs, that way all the games would mean something to both teams. Enough of my venting. The Sun Devils close the season with a 10-4 record, which is right about where I thought they'd finish, it was a nice season, too bad it finished with this mess of a game.
Observations:
- The Sun Devils are now 0-5 in the Holiday Bowl.
- Arizona State seemed to really miss Marion Grice.
- It was nice to see D.J. Foster back at full strength.
- Texas Tech did a nice job of taking Jaelen Strong out of the game.
- Texas Tech actually out-tempo'd Arizona States up-tempo offense.
- Holiday Bowl doppelganger? Kliff Kingsbury and Ryan Gosling.
- That wasn't the Arizona State defense that I saw most of the season.
- It was a really quiet night for Will Sutton in his last game as a Sun Devil.
- Lots of records set in the game, including most first downs in a season for ASU.
- The Arizona Cardinals could use a TE like Jace Amaro.
- Who the heck is Davis Webb? He's not bad.
- Horrible clock management by ASU to end the first half.
- Where did that Texas Tech defense come from?
- When did Taylor Kelly become such a running threat?
- Taylor Kelly was up & down but still broke ASU's single season total yards record.
