Top 10 All Time Arizona Cardinals

Looking only at the Cardinals since they've been in Arizona, who are the top 10 players who have suited up for the Arizona Cardinals?   Here's my list:
  1. Larry Fitzgerald - WR - he's putting up HOF numbers.
  2. Aeneas Williams - CB - he's a finalist for the class of 2012 HOF class.
  3. Kurt Warner - QB - he didn't have a long career in AZ but his impact was spectacular.
  4. Roy Green - WR - probably the best player of the early Arizona Cardinals days.
  5. Adrian Wilson - DB - 5 time Pro Bowler.
  6. Luis Sharpe - OT - best offensive lineman in Arizona Cardinals history.
  7. Simeon Rice - DE - best pass rusher in Arizona Cardinals history.
  8. Anquan Boldin - WR - he and Fitzgerald were unstoppable.
  9. Tim McDonald - DB - 3 time All Pro
  10. Darnell Dockett - DT - a dominant force in the middle of the Cardinals defense for years.
Others:  Neil Lomax, Eric Hill, Rob Moore, Stump Mitchell, Seth Joyner, Jake Plummer, Edgarrin James, Bertrand Berry, Rich Camarillo & E.J. Junior.

Peyton Manning lands in . . . . ?

If I were a gambling man (wait, I am), I would gamble that Peyton Manning does not return to the Colts for the 2012-13 football season.  The writing seems to be on the wall.   The Colts have the number 1 pick in the draft and the clear cut number pick this year is QB Andrew Luck who is seen as the best college QB prospect in years.  The Colts also recently fired President/GM/Peyton Manning booster Bill Polian (no doubt to replace him with someone who would prefer to go full throttle into the Andrew Luck era).  Also gone, head coach Jim Caldwell and his staff, meaning a new system would need to be installed and undoubtedly one of the appeals for Manning to return to the Colts was the fact that he wouldn't need to learn a new system, that benefit is no longer there.  There's also the question of the $25 million that the Colts would need to pay Peyton next year, I'm guessing there may be some hesitation on their part to pay that amount out when they have a stud QB ready to step in.   They seem to be attempting to make it as unappealing as possible for him to want to return.  With all that being said, where does Peyton land?   I'd rank the teams in this order:
  1. Washington Redskins - the Redskins QB play has been absolutely abysmal for years now, they also have a deep pocket owner, it would not shock me to see him wind up in Washington.
  2. Arizona Cardinals - the Cardinals had to be a little bit disappointed in the play of Kevin Kolb last year, he never seemed to quite grasp their system (and some doubt that he will ever fit in the Cardinals offense), they also may not want to pay him the $7 million roster bonus he is due.  Playing in an offense that Kurt Warner thrived in and with established stars such as Larry Fitzgerald, Todd Heap and Beanie Wells would no doubt prove to be tempting to Peyton Manning.
  3. New York Jets - are the Jets ready to give up on Mark Sanchez?  It depends on who you listen to.  While it would probably be a short term upgrade, I doubt that it would help the team long term.
  4. Miami Dolphins - I have no doubt that the Dolphins will have a new QB next year, the question is who.  They have to give some consideration to Manning if he becomes available.  My guess though is that with the hiring of former Packer offensive coordinator Jim Philbin as head coach they will probably make Packer backup QB Matt Flynn their number 1 target
  5. Seattle Seahawks - if Tavaris Jackson is not the long term answer, why not find a better short term fit?  I'm guessing it's a long shot but you never know.
  6. San Fransisco 49ers - with the play of Alex Smith this season and in the playoffs I'm guessing he may have bought himself more time but still, San Francisco would have to be an attractive option for Manning if he wants to have a chance at another Super Bowl ring.
  7. Denver Broncos - let's get serious, Tim Tebow is not going to take the Broncos to the next level, at the very least, the chance for Tebow to work with Manning for a couple of years could prove invaluable to him.  Denver is not out of the realm of possibilities for Manning.
  8. Cleveland Browns - I don't think Colt McCoy is the answer in Cleveland, I'm guessing they will be exploring their options this offseason, if that's the case, they'd have to consider Peyton Manning wouldn't they?
  9. Kansas City Chiefs - Are they ready to give up on Matt Cassel?  He hasn't taken them far, it might be time for a change.
  10. Dallas Cowboys - Like the Chiefs, are they ready to try something new?  Tony Romo has had plenty of opportunities to take the Cowboys to the next level and he can't seem to get them there.

Andrew Sullivan on Obama Critics

What an excellent article by Andrew Sullivan in the most recent 'Newsweek', I high recommend a read.  Sullivan does a nice job of pointing out many of the successes of the Obama administration.

Here are some highlights:

"You hear it everywhere. Democrats are disappointed in the president. Independents have soured even more. Republicans have worked themselves up into an apocalyptic fervor. And, yes, this is not exactly unusual.

A president in the last year of his first term will always get attacked mercilessly by his partisan opponents, and also, often, by the feistier members of his base. And when unemployment is at remarkably high levels, and with the national debt setting records, the criticism will—and should be—even fiercer. But this time, with this president, something different has happened. It’s not that I don’t understand the critiques of Barack Obama from the enraged right and the demoralized left. It’s that I don’t even recognize their description of Obama’s first term in any way. The attacks from both the right and the left on the man and his policies aren’t out of bounds. They’re simply—empirically—wrong.

A caveat: I write this as an unabashed supporter of Obama from early 2007 on. I did so not as a liberal, but as a conservative-minded independent appalled by the Bush administration’s record of war, debt, spending, and torture. I did not expect, or want, a messiah. I have one already, thank you very much. And there have been many times when I have disagreed with decisions Obama has made—to drop the Bowles-Simpson debt commission, to ignore the war crimes of the recent past, and to launch a war in Libya without Congress’s sanction, to cite three. But given the enormity of what he inherited, and given what he explicitly promised, it remains simply a fact that Obama has delivered in a way that the unhinged right and purist left have yet to understand or absorb. Their short-term outbursts have missed Obama’s long game—and why his reelection remains, in my view, as essential for this country’s future as his original election in 2008."

NFL in Los Angeles?

Los Angeles is building a new stadium or two with the hopes of luring an NFL team or two back to Los Angeles.  It does makes good business sense for the NFL to have a team in Los Angeles so I think it will happen.  The question now becomes how do they get a team in Los Angeles?   It doesn't sound like the NFL is in favor of expansion at this time.  That means that more than likely a team would need to relocate.   I'm generally opposed to teams relocating, I don't think it's fair to the fans of those teams but unfortunately with the big money being thrown around the fans don't often get taken into consideration.   That being said, who winds up in Los Angeles?   I rank the teams in this order:
  1. Oakland Raiders - with the recent passing of Al Davis this seems to make the most sense, they were in Los Angeles once already, they still have a fan base there, the Raiders aren't happy with their stadium situation in Oakland.  I think this will happen.
  2. St Louis Rams - this is probably the only team I could get behind a move for, simply because St Louis poached the Rams from Los Angeles to start with.  There are some lease issues so it's not out of the realm of possibilities.
  3. Buffalo Bills - if it's about the money, this makes a lot of sense, moving from one of the smallest markets to one of the biggest would be a financial boon to the Bills owners (and the other NFL owners for that matter).  They have already moved some home games to Toronto.
  4. Jacksonville Jaguars - IMO, the Jags to Los Angles makes the most sense, they have the smallest market, they are one of the newest teams, the fan support is really not there, it's really not working there. The new owner does seem committed to Jacksonville though so who knows.
  5. San Diego Chargers - I'd hate to see the Chargers leave San Diego, they are an integral part of that city, but they are also not happy with their stadium situation, they are nearby, it makes some sense (although not for 2012).
  6. Minnesota Vikings - still no stadium deal, I'd hate to see it but the state of Minnesota is making it easy for the Vikings to escape if they so wish.  The Vikings will not stay in Minnesota without a new stadium

TPSG NFL Mock Draft 1.0

I admit it, I'm a draftnik, I love the NFL Draft.  I know, we haven't even crowned the 2012 Super Bowl champs yet, but screw it, here's my first look at the 2012 NFL Draft:
  1. Colts - Andrew Luck - QB - Stanford
  2. Rams - Justin Blackmon - WR - Oklahoma St
  3. Vikings - Matt Kalil - OT - USC
  4. Browns - Robert Griffin III - QB - Baylor
  5. Bucs - Trent Richardson - RB - Alabama
  6. Redskins - Morris Claiborne - CB - LSU
  7. Jaguars - Dre Kirkpatrick - CB - Alabama
  8. Panthers - Devon Still - DT - Penn St
  9. Dolphins - Riley Reiff - OT - Iowa
  10. Bills - Quinton Coples - DE - North Carolina
  11. Chiefs - Jonathan Martin - OT - Stanford
  12. Seahawks - Ryan Tannehill - QB - Texas A&M
  13. Cardinals - Michael Floyd - WR - Notre Dame
  14. Cowboys - Alfonzo Dennard - CB - Nebraska
  15. Eagles - Luke Kuechly - LB - Boston College
  16. Jets - Mark Barron - DB - Alabama
  17. Bengals - David DeCastro - OG - Stanford
  18. Chargers - Nick Perry - DE - USC
  19. Bears - Kendall Wright - WR - Baylor
  20. Titans - Melvin Ingram - OLB - South Carolina
  21. Bengals - Peter Konz - C - Wisconsin
  22. Browns - Zach Brown - OLB - North Carolina
  23. Lions - Janoris Jenkins - CB - North Alabama
  24. Steelers - Cordy Glenn - OG - Georgia
  25. Broncos - David Wilson - RB - Virginia Tech
  26. Giants - Dwayne Allen - TE - Clemson
  27. Texans - Dontari Poe - DT - Memphis
  28. Patriots - Alshon Jeffery - WR - South Carolina
  29. Ravens - Vontaze Burfict - LB - Arizona State
  30. 49ers - Mohamed Sanu - WR - Rutgers
  31. Patriots - Jared Crick - DE - Nebraska
  32. Packers - Jerel Worthy - DT - Michigan State
Obviously, this is a very early mock draft, the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft hasn't yet been reached and the NFL Combines are still to be held, so it will change considerably come draft time.

Recess Appointments

How do these people get elected?

"It's astounding to me that the president is claiming these are recess appointments and within his authority, when Congress was not in fact in recess."  "These appointments are an affront to the Constitution. No matter how you look at this, it doesn't pass the smell test. I hope the House considers my resolution as soon as we return to Washington so we can send a message to President Obama."  - Diane Black (R-Tenn)

Victoria's Secret Swim 2012

Victoria's Secret knows how to make a commercial.

Nice behind the scene's footage here.

TPSG NFL Awards

Most Valuable Player - Aaron Rodgers, Packers
Aaron Rodgers is easily the best player on the best team, he get's the nod here.  Rodgers had an NFL high QB percentage and his 45-6 TD to INT ratio is just remarkable.  Drew Brees is my runner up.

Offensive Player of the Year - Drew Brees, Saints
I know I picked Rodgers as the MVP but I think Brees may have had a better year statistically, if not one of the best years ever for an NFL QB.  He broke the NFL record for passing yards in a season and he did while breaking the NFL record for single season completion percentage.  He also led the NFL in TD passes. Rodgers would be my runner up.

Defensive Player of the Year - Jared Allen, Vikings
If this was the defensive MVP Award I'd go with someone on a winning team and the edge then would go to Terrell Suggs of the Ravens but since it's the Defensive Player of the Year Award, how can you not give it to Jared Allen of the Vikings, he had 22 sacks, that ties him with Mark Gastineau for the second best total in NFL history (take away the cheap sack Michael Strahan had on Brett Favre and it would have been a record tying season).

Rookie of the Year - Cam Newton, Panthers
Cam Newton had perhaps the best rookie year ever.  He passed Peyton Manning for the most passing yards ever by a rookie.  He finished the year with 4,051 yards passing with 21 passing TD's (plus he had 706 yards rushing and 14 rushing TD's).   Aldon Smith of the 49ers, Von Miller of the Broncos and Andy Dalton of the Bengals also had nice rookie seasons.

Coach of the Year - Jim Harbaugh, 49ers
Harbaugh took a 6-10 team that had failed to make the playoffs in 9 straight seasons and turned them into a 13-3 team that had the second best record in the NFC.  Mike McCarthy of the Packers and Bill Belichick of the Patriots would be 2nd and 3rd in my book.

TPSG Top 10 Movies of 2011

Of the movies that I've seen, here are my Top 10 for 2011.
  1. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig - Great movie, action, suspense, twists and surprises and most importantly Rooney Mara.
  2. Moneyball - Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill - I'm a sucker for a good baseball movie, this one was very good.
  3. Bridesmaids - Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph - easily the funniest movie of the year. Wiig was hilarious and Melissa McCarthy nearly stole the show.
  4. Rise of the Planet of the Apes - James Franco, Freida Pinto - I really enjoyed this one, the direction was fantastic, the special effects top notch, it really moved along nicely.
  5. Cedar Rapids - Ed Helms, John C. Reilly - A really understated but hilarious movie. Helms and Reilly were a great combination.
  6. Drive - Ryan Gosling, Albert Brooks - Gosling has become quite the actor, he was great in this role as a Hollywood stunt driver who doubles as a wheelman for hire.  Strong supporting cast too.
  7. Mission Impossible:  Ghost Protocol - Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner - Probably the best action movie of the year, they had some incredible stunts in this one to go along with a fast moving story.
  8. Warrior - Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton - Tom Hardy is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors.  If you are a UFC fan you'll like this one.
  9. The Descendants - George Clooney - Clooney does middle aged dolt pretty good in this one as he tries to reconnect with his young daughters after a tragic accident to their mother.
  10. Contagion - Matt Damon, Lawrence Fishburne - A frightening movie about the spread of a deadly disease across the world.
Worst Movie of 2011?   I should name this the annual TPSG Adam Sandler Award, was there a worse movie in 2011 than "Jack and Jill"???   I doubt it.  I'm a big Adam Sandler fan ("Just Go With It" was tolerable) but some of the crap he puts out just makes me shake my head.

    Cardinals 23, Seahawks 20

The Cardinals knocked off the Seahawks 23-20 in OT today to finish the season with a 8-8 record.  Considering that they started the season 1-6, it was a nice run to close the season.  Now they just need to carry this momentum into the off season and into next year.  I'm optimistic about the future, they've got a good young team without a lot of glaring weaknesses (outside of experience).

    Observations:
-The Cardinals finished the year 4-0 in OT this season.
-John Skelton finished with a 6-2 record as starting QB this season.  Can you say QB controversy?
-When Todd Heap is healthy and playing, he can make a difference.
-Props out to 5'7", 185 lb LaRod Stephens-Howling (career high 93 yards rushing on 21 carries).
-Props should also go out to Ray Horton, he did a great job with the Cardinals defense.
-Another nice game by Larry Fitzgerald (9 catches for 149 yards), what else is new.
-Darryl Washington was all over the field (11 solo tackles, 1 sack, 3 TFL, 1 PD).
-Another sellout, they have sold out every game since moving into University of Phoenix stadium.
-The Cardinals finished with a 4-2 record in the NFC West.
-Up next?  NFL Draft, April 26, 2012.  WR please.

    Vikings 13, Bears 17

The Vikings fall to the Bears 17-13 today to finish their season with a franchise tying worst single season 3-13 record.  You hate to root for a loss but a win today would not have benefited the Vikings one bit, the loss at least sealed the #3 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and that will benefit them more that a season ending win.  Now they just need to settle their stadium situation, and quick, lest the Vikings being playing in Los Angeles (and soon).

    Observations:
-Jared Allen was a man possessed today, he had 3.5 sacks and finished the season with 22 sacks.  That breaks Chris Doleman's Vikings team record and ties him with Mark Gastineau for the 2nd best single season sack total in NFL history.
-It was nice to see a good game out of Toby Gerhart (67 yards on 15 carries), they will need to count on him heavily next season.
-The Bears snapped a 5 game losing streak, still, without Cutler and Forte, they're not very good.
-I'm guessing this is the last we've seen from Mike Martz as Bears Offensive Coordinator.
-So long Jimmy Kleinsasser, it was nice run.  I wouldn't be shocked if we've seen the last of Steve Hutchinson and maybe Visanthe Shianco too (at least in a Vikings uniform).
-I'm tired of the Tampa-2 defense, give me a 3-4 any day.
-Joe Webb played like he wants a shot at the starting QB job next year.
-Building blocks for the Vikings going forward?  Christian Ponder/Joe Webb, Percy Harvin, Kyle Rudolph, John Sullivan, Jared Allen, Everson Griffen, Christian Ballard, Chad Greenway, Toby Gerhart.  Lots of help needed, especially at OL, WR and in the secondary.
-Watch the game in 60 seconds here.
-Up next?  NFL Draft, April 26, 2012.
