Cardinals 27, Ravens 30
Cardinals fall to the Ravens 30-27 today. The Cardinals drop to 1-6 on the season. What a miserable team, what happened? I'm beginning to lean to the thought that it wasn't so much Ken Whisenhunt's coaching that got them into the Super Bowl a few years back but rather the fact that they lucked into Kurt Warner. I'm guessing he's not on the hot seat at this point but they're not going to give him forever either (same goes for GM Rod Graves).
Observations:
-Cardinals led 24-3 at one point today. WTF happened?
-Cardinals have now lost 6 games in a row.
-The Cards were 2-11 on 3rd down conversions, needless to say, they need to improve on that.
-It was good to see Beanie Wells back out there (83 yards rushing, 1 TD).
-I like Patrick Peterson returning punts.
-It was good to see Sam Acho & O'Brien Schofield out there, it's time to get the young guys out there.

Vikings 24, Panthers 21
Vikings knock off the Panthers 24-21 today in Charlotte in the battle of rookie QB's. The Vikings move to 2-6 on the season. The whole offense just looks so much more cohesive with Christian Ponder at QB than it did with Donovan McNabb, he's still got some growing to do and they do need to get better around him (they could use a LT and a #1 WR) but I like what I've seen of him in his 2 starts to date.
Observations:

ASU 48, Colorado 14
ASU knocks off Colorado 48-14 today. The Sun Devils move to 6-2 on the season. Colorado was totally outmatched today, it was just way too easy for the Devils. Colorado is just not a good football team. Jon Embree is just in his first year as head coach at Colorado, it's not really fair to judge him on this team, Colorado fans will need to be patient (much like Minnesota fans with Jerry Kill). ASU remains in control of the PAC12 South.
Observations:
-522 total yards for ASU today.
-Colorado actually won the time of possession battle (33:11 to 26:49), that's a testament to ASU's quick strike capabilities.
-Another nice game for Brock Osweiler (307 yards passing, 2 TD's).
-Cameron Marshall continues to shine (114 yards rushing, 3 TD's).
-10 different players caught passes for ASU.
-Alex Garoutte is impressing me with his kicking.
-Colorado had 18 players on their injury list.

Minnesota 22, Iowa 21
Gophers win!!!! 22-21 over Iowa today. Floyd of Rosedale stays in Minneapolis!!! Much improved effort by the Gophers today, they really played hard, you have to like seeing that from a 1-6 (now 2-6) team. This was the definition of a trap game for Iowa, they were coming off 2 big wins, they were on the road, they were playing against a far inferior team (Iowa was a 16 point favorite), you had to kind of see it coming. I don't know that the better team won today but I'll take it.
Observations:

Income Inequality Deniers
Nice article by Jonathan Chait in New York Magazine this week about Income Inequality Deniers, I highly recommend giving it a read. The complete article can be found here.
Some highlights:
Rising income inequality, like climate change, is an ideologically inconvenient issue for conservatives. They would prefer not to discuss it altogether. If forced to discuss it, they will generally either deny its existence or simply carry on as if it doesn’t exist.
The underlying facts, like the facts of climate change, are stark. Over the last few decades, income growth for most Americans has slowed to a crawl, while income for the very rich has exploded. That’s a reversal of the three decades following World War II, when all income groups got richer, with the poor and middle class rising at a faster rate than the rich. Crucially, the Congressional Budget Office’s new analysis shows that changes in government policy over this period have made inequality worse. (In CBO-speak: “The equalizing effect of transfers and taxes on household income was smaller in 2007 than it had been in 1979.”)
We’re not having a debate about how to reverse or even stop the growth of inequality. Nobody has a real plan to do that. The Democratic plan is to slightly arrest the growth of inequality by hiking taxes on the rich a few percentage points, so as to minimize the need to cut the social safety net. The Republican plan is to slash taxes for the rich and programs for the poor, thereby massively increasing inequality.
That is a hard position to defend in the context of exploding inequality, and conservatives would rather not defend it. Instead the right’s response has been to persistently deny or ignore the facts. Rick Perry, pressed by a reporter to explain why he was proposing a tax plan that would widen income inequality further, replied, "I don’t care about that." The Wall Street Journal editorial page today dismissed the Tax Policy Center, whose calculations persistently show the ways in which various Republican tax proposals would widen inequality, as “liberal.” It didn’t even pretend to dispute the substance of the calculations. Eric Cantor gave a speech about income inequality centering on stories about how his grandmother worked hard and pulled herself up by the bootstraps in the old days. It was a nice speech if you like stories about plucky grandmothers. It failed to grasp the central dilemma, which is that it was a lot easier for poor people to move up sixty years ago, when tax rates on the rich happened to be far higher, than it is today.

Top 10 Viking QB's of All-Time
With Christian Ponder taking over the Minnesota Vikings starting QB position, it got me to thinking about who the best QB in the history of the Vikings is, here's my Top 10:
- Fran Tarkenton - This is a no-brainer. NFL Hall of Famer. Led Vikings to 3 Super Bowls. NFL MVP in 1975. 9 time Pro-Bowler. His 33, 098 passing yards & 239 TD's are Viking team records. His 92 career wins leads all Viking QB's.
- Duante Culpepper - 3 time Pro-Bowler. Holds Viking single season records with 4,717 passing yards & 39 TD's in 2004. His 38 career victories is 3rd amongst Viking QB's.
- Tommy Kramer - One of the longest tenured QB's in Vikings history. Threw for 24, 777 career yards & 159 TD's. Pro-Bowler in 1986. Holds Vikings single game passing yards record of 490 yards. His 54 career wins is 2nd amongst Viking QB's.
- Warren Moon - 6th on Vikings All Time Passing Yards & Passing TD's list. 33 passing TD's in 1995. 4200+ passing yards in 1994 & 1995.
- Randall Cunningham - Only 1 season as a starter for the Vikings but led them to a 15-1 season & the NFC Championship game in 1998 when he threw for 34 TD's & 3,704 yards passing.
- Brett Favre - Only 2 years as a Vikings starter but 1 of those years was phenomenal, 33 TD's, 4202 yards passing, led Vikings to a 12-4 record and a playoff appearance.
- Joe Kapp - Led the Vikings to their first Super Bowl. Pro-Bowler in 1969. Holds Vikings single game TD record of 7 TD's. 10th on Vikings All Time Passing Yards & Passing TD's list.

Cardinals 20, Steelers 32
Another loss for the Cardinals, this time 32-20 to the Steelers. This loss drops the Cardinals to 1-5 on the season. They looked completely hapless out there. They are not a good football team. I'm guessing they are starting to have some regrets about that Kevin Kolb trade, especially with Andrew Luck appearing to be within their grasps.
Observations:
-This makes 5 straight loses for the Cardinals.
-The failure of the front office to obtain another top line WR this past off season is coming back to haunt the Cardinals.
-The OL needs to get better, and fast.
-The 95 yard TD pass from Ben Roethlisberger to Mike Wallace was the longest pass reception in the Steelers long storied history.
-Beanie Wells hurt once again, that guy just can't stay on the field. Remember all the RB depth they had? Tim Hightower traded, Ryan Williams hurt, Beanie Wells hurt. Ouch.
-Ray Horton's defense continues to struggle.
-The Cardinals are 6-16 since Kurt Warner retired.
-Is it time to start pointing fingers at Ken Whisenhunt?

The Christian Ponder era opens the same way the Donovan McNabb era ended for the Vikings, in a loss, this time 33-27 to the Packers. This loss drops the Vikings to 1-6 on the season. Ponder struggled some but still was good enough to keep the Vikings in the game to the very end against an undefeated defending Super Bowl champions. I certainly saw some things to build around with Ponder, he has nice mobility and seems to have a good grasp of the game. Whether he has the arm to succeed at this level may be up to debate, he seemed to struggle a bit with his accuracy on his deep balls. It was a decent first start, hopefully it will be a learning experience for him and he will grow from it. If not, at least they'll know.
Observations:
-Aaron Rodgers is good (24 of 30 for 335 yards, 3 TD's, O INT's).
-Adrian Peterson had a nice game (24 carries, 175 yards rushing, 1 TD).
-They could have really used Chris Cook, idiot. Antoine Winfield was out of this game also, you don't want to be without 2 of your 3 best CB's against Aaron Rodgers and the deep Packers WR corps. Starting Safety Jamarca Sanford was also out.
-The Vikings could also really use a number 1 WR who can stretch the field.
-Mason Crosby has a nice leg.

Minnesota 14, Nebraska 41
Gopher lose again, this time to Nebraska 41-14. The Gophers drop to 1-5 on the season, a 1-11 season seems to be within reach (I guess there's only room for improvement from there though isn't there?). They were completely outmanned once again, the difference in speed in athleticism between the 2 teams was quite noticeable. If there was any positives about today, it was that they actually showed some heart, you could see them competing and fighting down to the very end.
Observations:
-Nebraska total yards 508, Minnesota total yards 254. Enough said?
-The Gophers passing attack need a lot of work. Lots of drops and lots of over-throws.
-Gophers WIN the 2nd half!!! 14-7. Of course Nebraska had called off the wolves.
-Some real questionable officiating in this game.
-Taylor Martinez has an awful throwing motion.
-When did Nebraska go to a no-huddle offense?
-Rex Burkhead is not someone you want to arm tackle.
-Dan Orseske needs to get a lot more consistent with his punting.
-ESPN did a nice feature on Jerry Kill today.

Obama Foreign Policy
Osama Bin Laden, dead. Moammar Qaddafi, dead. Anwar al-Awlaki, dead. Al Qaeda, crippled. Has a U.S. President ever had this much foreign policy success? I can't recall one who has. Conservative writer Andrew Sullivan blogged: "To rid the world of Osama bin Laden, Anwar al-Awlaki and Moammar Qaddafi within six months: if Obama were a Republican, he'd be on Mount Rushmore by now." We are without a doubt a safer country (and world) since Barack Obama took office as President of the United States in 2009.
Which of the announced Republican presidential candidates do you think would have that type of an impact on foreign policy BTW? Herman Cain? I don't think so. Ron Paul? If you're an isolationist maybe. Michele Bachmann? God no. Mitt Romney? He opposed Obama's approach on Libya that didn't cost one American life. Rick Perry? He seems to have multiple foreign policy positions. Newt Gingrich? Do you really want to go back to the Neo-Con approach? How about we give Obama his due, he's done an extraordinary job on foreign policy.

Bryant Gumbel made some of the dumbest comments of the year on a recent "Real Sports" show on HBO, check them out:
“Finally tonight, if the NBA lockout is going to be resolved any time soon, it seems likely to be done in spite of David Stern, not because of him. I say that because the NBA’s infamously egocentric commissioner seems more hell-bent lately on demeaning the players than resolving his game’s labor impasse.
How else to explain Stern’s rants in recent days? To any and everyone who’d listen, he has alternately knocked union leader Billy Hunter, said the players were getting inaccurate information, and started sounding chicken-little claims about what games might be lost if the players didn’t soon see things his way.
Stern’s version of what’s been going on behind closed doors has, of course, been disputed. But his efforts were typical of a commissioner, who has always seemed eager to be viewed as some kind of modern plantation overseer treating NBA men as if they were his boys. It’s part of Stern’s M.O. Like his past self-serving edicts on dress code or the questioning of officials, his moves are intended to do little more than show how he’s the one keeping the hired hands in their place."Perhaps someone should inform him that the average NBA salary is now $5.15 million, that's the highest of any of the 4 major sports. Perhaps he should also be informed that the U.S. unemployment rate sits at 9.1%. Or that the U.S. household income has fallen to it's lowest level in more than a decade. Or that the poverty rate is at a 17 year high. Invite me to that plantation anytime Bryant Gumbel. This comes close to Latrell Sprewell's "I have a family to feed" quote of several years back. These out of touch idiots need to start thinking twice before speaking.

Vikings 10, Bears 39
The Vikings fall to the Bears 39-10 in prime time tonight. They really stunk up the joint, it was easily their least impressive showing of the season. This loss drops the Vikings to 1-5 on the season, no team has ever started 1-5 on the season and made the playoffs, I highly doubt that the Vikings will be the exception to that trend. I would think that this loss would signal that it's time to make a few changes, specifically at the QB position, I think that it may be time to start the Christian Ponder era.
Observations:
-Play 8 in the box, stop the run, make the Vikings pass, it's a pretty simple formula to beat the Vikings at this point.
-Not a lot of fire in the Vikings tonight.

ASU 27, Oregon 41
The Sun Devils lose to the Ducks 41-27 tonight in Eugene. The Devils fall to 5-2 on the season. ASU looked good early but they just couldn't keep up, the Ducks just wore them down. Chances are that these 2 teams will meet again later on this season in the first PAC12 Championship game (with Oregon in the drivers seat in the PAC12 North & ASU in the driver's seat in the PAC12 South at this point), unfortunately that game would also probably be in Eugene.
Observations:
-Oregon was averaging 50.2 points a game so far this year, ASU held them to 41, that's 9 less than their average, I guess that's something isn't it?
-Oregon just strikes so quickly, you really need to limit your mistakes against them.
-Too many stupid personal foul penalties on the Sun Devils yet again tonight, that is killing them.
-Vontaze Burfict really hasn't stood out much for ASU since their first game, the stupid mistakes continue too, I'm guessing he's falling down the draft charts.

Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino
I just got back from a short trip to Las Vegas, I stayed at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. It was my first time staying there, I enjoyed it immensely, I highly recommend it if you're looking for a nice place to stay in Las Vegas. Everyone I dealt with there was first class. The room was nice & in good repair, I loved the Hollywood theme, the large flat screen TV was a nice bonus, as was the in room safe. Loved gambling at the Pleasure Pit, the girls were gorgeous (distracting too though). The pool area looked nice, I wish the weather had been nicer. The Spice Market Buffet was probably the best buffet that I have been to in Vegas. Earl of Sandwich had great sandwiches too. Being directly connected to the Miracle Mile Shops was also nice, lots of great shopping is available there. The location was excellent too, walking distance to much of the strip. If there was a negative it would be the lack of CG action (can you crack that code?) that I could find, but from what I hear that's usually not much of a problem for this place so I'll just assume my timing was off.
Tip: Give BookIt.com a try when booking your room, they easily had the cheapest rates I could find for this hotel (I saved at least $20/night using them).

Krugman on Oligarchs
Great Op-Ed this weekend by Paul Krugman in the New York Times.
I especially thought this quote was spot on in reference to the negative reaction of wealthy American's to the 'Occupy Wall Street' protests:
"The way to understand all of this is to realize that it’s part of a broader syndrome, in which wealthy Americans who benefit hugely from a system rigged in their favor react with hysteria to anyone who points out just how rigged the system is."

Vikings 34, Cardinals 10
The Vikes knock off the Cardinals 34-10 today, both teams now move to 1-4 on the season. The Vikings built up a 28-0 halftime lead today and were finally able to hold on for their first victory of the season. The Cardinals poor play early in the game really hurt them, the hole was just too deep for them to climb out of. Kevin Kolb continued to struggle at QB for the Cards, he really needs to pick up his game (Andy Reid really snookered them). Donovan McNabb needs to pick up his game too, he was only 10-21 for 169 yards, his passes were all over the place.
Observations:
-Adrian Peterson is the man (122 yards rushing & 3 TD's)!!!
-Marcus Sherels is doing a nice job on punt returns.
-DE Everson Griffin has really stepped up his game from year 1.
-WR Devin Aromashodu has also been stepping up his game.
-WR Percy Harvin is a surprisingly good blocker from the slot position.

-DE Brian Robison continues to impress as a starter (2 sacks).
-2 more sacks for Jared Allen (8.5 sacks through 5 games).

ASU 35, Utah 14
ASU knocks of Utah 35-14 to move to 5-1 on the season. I suspect they will continue to creep up in the Top 25 rankings (they are currently #22). This is easily Dennis Erickson's best team at ASU. Their speed and athleticism just wore Utah down, they couldn't keep up in the 2nd half. They just have so many weapons, they use them all too so you can't really focus on stopping any one player. Next weeks game against Oregon will be a nice barometer of their progress, I can't wait.
Observations:
-ASU really does have lots of playmakers.
-You're not in the Mountain West Conference anymore Utah.
-ASU was +5 on turnovers today, you don't lose much when you finish +5 on turnovers.
-Gerrell Robinson continued to shine, he has improved greatly as the season has progressed.
-This could have been WR Mike Willie's breakout game, dude is good. 7 catches, 98 yards, 2 TD's.
-The OL looked solid for being down 2 starters.

Minnesota 17, Purdue 45
Gophers lose to Purdue 45-17. This is really getting embarrassing. At least last week's loss was against a good Michigan team, this week they were pounded by a poor Purdue team. Blaming Brewster and his poor retention rate and the current lack of depth is getting old too, at some point you need to coach up the players you have. I'm not expecting victories, what I am expecting though is a team that shows up to play, a team that doesn't beat itself, a team that shows some effort, a team that plays disciplined fundamentally sound football and I really haven't been seeing much of any of that.
Observations:

TPSG 2011 MLB Post Season Awards
AL MVP
I'm a firm believer that the MVP winner should come from a playoff team, that being the case, my vote here goes to Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers (.344 ave, 30 HR, 105 RBI, 1.033 OPS, .586 SLG, .448 OBP) over Jose Bautista of the Blue Jays (.302, 43 HR, 103 RBI, 1.056 OPS, .608 SLG, .447 OBP).
NL MVP
This one comes down to 2 Brewers IMO, Ryan Braun (.332 ave, 33 HR, 111 RBI, .994 OPS, .597 SLG, .397 OBP) and Prince Fielder (.299 ave, 33 HR, 120 RBI, .981 OPS, .566 SLG, .415 OBP). I give the edge to Ryan Braun, his numbers are stronger and he just seemed to be the straw that stired the drink in Milwaukee. Matt Kemp of the Dodgers (.324 ave, 39 HR, 126 RBI, .986 OPS, .586 SLG, .399 OBP) would get my 3rd place vote followed by Joey Votto or the Reds (.309 ave, 29 HR, 103 RBI, .947 OPS, .531 SGL, .416 OBP).

Justin Verlander of the Tigers is the easy choice here, he had by far the best season (24-5, 2.40 ERA, 250 K in 251 IP). Jared Weaver of the Angels (18-8, 2.41 ERA, 198 K in 235.2 IP), CC Sabathia of the Yankees (19-8, 3.00 ERA, 230 K in 237.1 IP) and Jose Valverde of the Tigers (49 saves in 49 opportunities, 2.24 ERA) are distant 2nd, 3rd and 4th in my voting.

Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers is my choice in a much closer race than in the AL, he had an outstanding year on a team that struggled some (21-5, 2.28 ERA, 248 K in 233.1 IP). Roy Halladay had yet another outstanding year (19-6, 2.35 ERA, 220 K in 233.2 IP) and get's get my runner up vote over Ian Kennedy of the Diamondbacks (21-4, 2.88 ERA, 198 K in 222 IP).

My vote goes to Jeremy Hellickson of the Rays (13-10, 2.95 ERA, 117 K in 189 IP) over 1B-Eric Hosmer of the Royals (.293 ave, 19 HR, 78 RBI, .799 OPS, .465 SLG, .334 OBP) and 1B-Mark Trumbo of the Angels (.254 ave, 29 HR, 87 RBI, .768 OPS, .477 SLG, .291 OBP).

Joe Maddon of the Rays probably deserves some consideration here too given the great September run by the Rays.

Cardinals 27, Giants 31
Cardinals blow late lead, fall to the Giants, 31-27. This loss leaves the Cards at 1-3 on the season. The Giants scored 2 TD's in a 58 second span late in the game to win it. It was a very winnable game for the Cards. They are digging themselves quite the hole. They actually looked pretty good until late in the game, then things just fell apart. They had better fix things quickly, the 49ers are playing pretty good, they may just run away with this thing.
Observations:
-Was that a Darnell Dockett sighting?? Heck of a game for Darnell.
-I really like the Cardinals black uniforms.
-I've been pleasantly surprised by the play of A.J. Jefferson at CB.
-With LaRod Stephen-Howling (KR) & Patrick Peterson (PR), the Cardinals may have the best kick/punt return tandem in football.
-The OL needs to play much better, Kolb was sacked 4 times and was constantly under pressure.
-Officiating was questionable at best in this game.
-Another nice game by Fitz (8 catches for 102 yards), he is now the Cardinals All Time leader in reception yards and 100 yard reception games.
-The Cardinals really missed Beanie Wells last week, I suspect they would have beat the Seahawks had he played. He had 138 yards on 28 carries today with 3 TD's.
-WR Hakeem Nicks had a nice game for the Giants, he is really stepping up this year.
-Up next is the Vikings (0-4) @ Mall of America Field in Minneapolis.

Vikings 17, Chiefs 22
Vikings fall to Chiefs 22-17 in Kansas City. The Vikes drop to 0-4 on the season. Yet another winnable game they let get away from them (I'm sensing a trend). It's getting old.
Observations:
-I've seen enough of Donovan McNabb in purple, it's time to start the Christian Ponder era. McNabb is just too erratic, his receivers don't even have a chance on so many of his throws.
-The offense still looks very uncertain about what they are trying to do and what type of offense they want to be. The lock out really hurt them (new head coach, new offensive coordinator, new offense, new QB, limited practice time).
-WTF is a Ryan Succop?
-Where was the pass rush in the 2nd half?

-Despite what the skeptics say, you cannot win giving the football to Adrian Peterson every down.

ASU 35, Oregon St 20
This was the definition of a trap game for ASU, they were coming off a string of tough games (Missouri, Illinois, USC), they were up against an Oregon St team that has struggled so far this year. They were prime for a let down and did not disappoint in that respect, they came out very flat, there was no intensity anywhere to be seen to start this game. Fortunately, they were able to turn it on and finished strong enough to come out of the game with a victory. ASU moves to 4-1 on the year.
Observations:
-Who is this A.J. Pickens fella?
-Turnovers will kill you, ASU was lucky to come out with a victory after turning the ball over 4 times.
-It was nice to see Gerrell Robinson catching the ball with his hands and not his body, he has looked much better the last couple of weeks.
-The secondary had a nice game, they are very athletic and quick to the ball.
-Jamal Miles is a nice all purpose back (249 total yards).
-Cameron Marshall had another nice game (80 yards on 14 carries).
-It was nice to see Adam Archuleta & Marvel Smith get inducted into the ASU Sports Hall of Fame.
-Up next week in Salt Lake City to take on Utah.

Minnesota 0, Michigan 58
58 doughnut. Pathetic performance by the Gophers today, this is a BAD BAD football team. I really want to give coach Kill the benefit of the doubt, he seems like a good guy, but this team has been God awful so far this year, I mean historically God awful too, even by the low Gopher football standards. What's most disconcerting to me is that I really haven't seen improvement as the season has moved along.
Observations:
-The Gophers did not show up to play again today, some of that has to fall on the coaches. If this keeps up, the Jerry Kill honeymoon may be short lived, he is looking completely overmatched at this level so far.
-Tackling was atrocious.
-Lots of penalties once again, that falls on the coaching too.
-5 games, 2 sacks. How's that even possible??
-Brewster recruits don't seem to buying into Kill's system, almost no leadership at all from the upper classes.
-The Gophers overall lack of athleticism was never more noticeable than today (especially with MarQueis Gray & Troy Stoudermire out today due to injuries).
-No doubt, the cupboard was bare talent-wise for Kill & staff, but this is ridiculous, they lacked discipline, they lacked execution and they lacked effort.
-So far, Coach Kill get an F grade from me.
-Can we now stop with the calls to start Max Shortell at QB, he's obviously not ready, especially given the weak offensive line where someone with Gray's scrambling ability is much needed.
-Up next is Purdue (2-1) in West Lafayette, Purdue is probably the weakest team left on the Gophers schedule, I'm still predicting a Purdue blowout though.
