Jon Stewart Calls Out Arizona

Trust me, we're not all crazy in Arizona, we do have our share of nuts though and somehow they've gained control of the asylum.  People just need to start voting, in EVERY election, especially the primaries.

TPSG Top 10 Movies of 2004

Continuing with my look at the best movies of years gone by.

Top 10 Movies of 2004:
  1. Million Dollar Baby - Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank
  2. Anchorman:  The Legend of Ron Burgundy - Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate
  3. Hotel Rwanda - Don Cheadle, Nick Nolte
  4. Kill Bill, Volume 2 - Uma Thurman, Daryl Hannah
  5. The Passion of the Christ - Jim Caviezel, Monica Bellucci
  6. Ray - Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington
  7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Jim Carey, Kate Winslet
  8. Sideways - Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church
  9. The Aviator - Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett
  10. Spiderman 2 - Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst
Clint Eastwood hit another home run with "Million Dollar Baby", IMO it was easily the best film of 2004.  "Anchorman:  The Legend of Ron Burgundy" may just be Will Ferrell's best work, it was easily the funniest film of 2004.  "Hotel Rwanda" does a fantastic job of telling of the horrors of the Rwanda genocides.  "Kill Bill, Volume 2" is yet another great film by Quentin Tarantino.  At one time Mel Gibson was highly respected in Hollywood, "The Passion of the Christ" is one reason for that.  Jamie Foxx gave the performance of the year as Ray Charles in "Ray".  "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is one of the best RomCom's you'll find in any year.  Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church going thru mid-life crisises makes for great entertainment in "Sideways".  Leonardo DiCaprio's depiction of Howard Hughes and his descent into madness was fantastic in "The Aviator".  "Spiderman 2" was a fantastic sequel, probably one of the best ever, highly entertaining.

2014 TPSG NFL Mock Draft 1.0

The NFL Scouting Combine is going on this week.  You know what that means!  It's time for a mock!  Keep in mind, it's still really early, this is going to change a lot before draft day, I just wanted to have one on the record pre-scouting combine.  So here goes:
  1. Houston Texans - Blake Bortles - QB - Central Florida
  2. St Louis Rams - Jake Matthews - OT - Texas A&M
  3. Jacksonville Jaguars - Jadeveon Clowney - DE - South Carolina
  4. Cleveland Browns - Johnny Manziel - QB - Texas A&M
  5. Oakland Raiders - Teddy Bridgewater - QB - Louisville
  6. Atlanta Falcons - Greg Robinson - OT - Auburn
  7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Sammy Watkins - WR - Clemson
  8. Minnesota Vikings - Khalil Mack - LB - Buffalo
  9. Buffalo Bills - Anthony Barr - LB - UCLA
  10. Detroit Lions - Darqueze Dennard - CB - Michigan State
  11. Tennessee Titans - Taylor Lewan - OT - Michigan
  12. New York Giants - Justin Gilbert - CB - Oklahoma State
  13. St Louis Rams - Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix - DB - Alabama
  14. Chicago Bears - Timmy Jernigan - DT - Florida State
  15. Pittsburgh Steelers - Marqise Lee - WR - USC
  16. Dallas Cowboys - Louis Nix - DT - Notre Dame
  17. Baltimore Ravens - Mike Evans - WR - Texas A&M
  18. New York Jets - Eric Ebron - TE - North Carolina
  19. Miami Dolphins - Zach Martin - OT - Notre Dame
  20. Arizona Cardinals - Cyrus Kouandjio - OT - Alabama
  21. Green Bay Packers - RaShede Hageman - DT - Minnesota
  22. Philadelphia Eagles - Calvin Pryor - DB - Louisville
  23. Kansas City Chiefs - Odell Beckham - WR - Louisiana State
  24. Cincinnati Bengals - C.J. Mosley - LB - Alabama
  25. San Diego Chargers - Bradley Roby - CB - Ohio State
  26. Cleveland Browns - Kelvin Benjamin - WR - Florida State
  27. New Orleans Saints - Kony Ealy - DE - Missouri
  28. Carolina Panthers - Marcus Roberson - CB - Florida
  29. New England Patriots - Jace Amaro - TE - Texas Tech
  30. San Francisco 49ers - Jason Verrett - CB - TCU
  31. Denver Broncos - Dee Ford - DE - Auburn
  32. Seattle Seahawks - Allen Robinson - WR - Penn State

Notes:
  • Blake Bortles is no lock at number 1, I could see Bridgewater, Manziel or Clowney there too.
  • I wouldn't be surprised to see the Rams move down from number 2, they don't have a great need for a QB and they could still get a solid OT about a dozen picks lower.
  • I don't see Jadeveon Clowney slipping past number 3, he's just got too much talent.
  • Johnny Manziel to the Browns just makes too much sense.
  • If any of the top 3 QB's slip to number 8, I suspect that they Vikings will jump on them.  If not, LB makes a ton of sense for them (with a QB then being selected in round 2).
  • I've got to believe that the Cardinals would love to keep building that OL, an upgrade at LT would help them a lot.  A QB like David Carr wouldn't shock me either.

TPSG Top 10 Movies of 2005

Continuing with my look at the best movies of years gone by.

Top 10 Movies of 2005:
  1. Batman Begins - Christina Bale, Michael Caine
  2. Munich - Eric Bana, Daniel Craig
  3. The 40 Year Old Virgin - Steve Carell, Catherine Keener
  4. Wedding Crashers - Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn
  5. Syriana - George Clooney, Matt Damon
  6. Crash - Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock
  7. A History of Violence - Viggo Mortenson, Maria Bello
  8. Cinderella Man - Russell Crowe, Rene Zellweger
  9. Walk the Line - Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon
  10. Jarhead - Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx
Christopher Nolan did a wonderful job of rejuvenating the Batman franchise.  Christian Bale was also a wonderful pick as Batman.  Stephen Spielberg hit another homerun with "Munich", it's a fascinating story.  Thank you Judd Apatow for bringing back the R-rated comedy, "The 40 Year Old Virgin" goes down in my book as one of the funniest movies ever.  "Wedding Crashers" is not far back either, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are a great combo.  I'm fascinated by stories of the middle east, oil, corruption, money and the CIA, "Syriana" does a great job on all fronts.  Paul Haggis does a great job of interlocking 4 stories about race, class and power in Los Angeles with "Crash", it's an incredibly thought provoking movie.  David Cronenberg does a great job of looking at violence, vengeance and survival of the fittest in "A History of Violence".  I'm a sucker for a good boxing movie and "Cinderella Man" is just that as it tackles underdog story of boxer James J. Braddock.  Joaquin Phoenix's performance as Johnny Cash is reason enough to see "Walk the Line".  "Jarhead" is a very underrated look at the life of a U.S. marine during the Gulf War, Jake Gyllenhaal really transformed himself in this one.

TPSG Top 10 Movies of 2006

Continuing with my look at the best movies of years gone by.

Top 10 Movies of 2006:
  1. The Departed - Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson
  2. Casino Royale - Daniel Craig, Judy Dench
  3. Children of Men - Clive Owen, Julianne Moore
  4. Borat - Sacha Baron Cohen, Ken Davitian
  5. Babel - Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett
  6. United 93 - David Alan Basche, Khalid Abdalla
  7. Letters From Iwo Jima/Flags of our Fathers - Ken Watanabe, Ryan Phillippe
  8. Little Miss Sunshine - Greg Kinear, Alan Arkin
  9. Apocalypto - Rudy Youngblood, Raoul Trujillo
  10. Mission:  Impossible III - Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman
"The Departed" was hands down the best film of 2006, great story, powerhouse cast, arguably the best director ever, I cannot recommend it higher.   Daniel Craig does a terrific job of re-energizing the James Bond series in "Casino Royale".  "Children of Men" is a harrowing look at the future.  "Borat" is one of the funniest movies that I've ever seen.  "Babel" does a masterful job of interlocking four distinct stories together into a tragic finale.  "United 93" is the story of the 9/11 attacks on the U.S., it's hard to watch but very well done, everyone should watch it.  I may not agree with Clint Eastwood's politics but the man is a tremendous filmmaker, "Letters From Iwo Jima" and "Flags Of Our Fathers" are 2 great movies about the Battle of Iwo Jima ("Letters From Iwo Jima" from the Japanese perspective, and "Flags of our Fathers" from the U.S. perspective). "Little Miss Sunshine" is a fun, quirky movie that follows the travails of the Hoover family as they take a road trip to California.  "Apacalypto" is a violent, brutal look at the Mayan culture, you won't be able to turn away.   I've been a big fan of all of the MI movies, no they aren't award winning films, but they are all highly entertaining, give "Mission:  Impossible III" a watch, you won't be disappointed.

Fixing America

I've posted this before, but given the lack of progress I'm seeing out of our current congress I'm going to post it again today.

20 Political Reforms to Reshape & Fix America:
  1. Filibuster Reform - filibuster abuse by the GOP has gotten out of hand, I think I'm fairly safe in saying that the current use of the filibuster was not what the founding fathers had in mind, let's fix it
  2. Electoral College - any system that allows someone to win the Presidency without a majority of the popular vote is flawed and in need of reform.  Let's move to a national popular vote
  3. Senate Composition - why does a state the size of Delaware have the same number of Senators as a state the size of California or Texas?  How about we give one of Delaware's Senate seats to a larger state, such as New York (thus giving Delaware 1 Senator & New York 3 Senators)?  Or we could just increase the number of Senators, say from 100 to 120 or so with the larger states gaining more Senate seats.
  4. Redistricting - the gerrymandering of congressional districts is taking away any real competition in many districts. In the 2012 elections Democratic House candidates won more votes than Republican House candidates yet the Republicans maintained their control of the House of Representatives, how is that a representative government?   The states obviously cannot be trusted to end this practice so let's pass federal legislation to prohibit partisan politicians from having a say in the composition of congressional districts.
  5. Lobbying reform - right now, we are a country that has been bought by corporate interests, we desperately need to get money out of politics.  One way to do that would be to put restrictions of former government officials from moving straight to K-Street after leaving office. More transparency and disclosure would also be helpful.
  6. Election Day - Federal standards are needed, the Voter Empowerment Act is a good place to start.  I'd also make election day a national holiday in an attempt to get more people to participate.  We should be making it easier for people to vote not doing everything in our power to discourage it.
  7. Trade Pacts - I'd renegotiate all existing 'free trade' pacts to include 'fair trade' provisions and enforce the 'fair trade' provisions that already exist but are not enforced.  Many of these free trade pacts have had a negative impact on middle class Americans, shouldn't we all be playing on an even playing field?
  8. Dream Act - we live in a country made up of immigrants, I don't see an issue with keeping the best and brightest immigrants here.  There are lots of economic benefits to this too. It's also not too realistic that we can round up all of the illegal immigrants and ship them out of the country anyways.  Pass the Dream Act.
  9. Single Payer Healthcare -  we pay more for healthcare than any other country in the world yet our healthcare system ranks #37 in the world, that's not acceptable.  It also appalls me that millions of Americans are going without healthcare.  Obamacare was a step in the right direction, but we can still do better.
  10. Assault Weapon Ban - nobody needs to own an assault weapon, they were designed for warfare, that's what they should be used for.  I'm tired of all the mass killings, it's time for action.
  11. Tax Reform - it's not right that the wealthy are paying less in taxes than those in the middle class, implementing the Buffet Rule would be a good starting point.  There's also absolutely no reason that dividends and capital gains shouldn't be taxed as income, let's fix that.  Putting an end to offshore tax havens should also be a priority as should stiffer penalties for tax evasion.  I'd also institute the Financial Transaction Tax
  12. Legalize Marijuana - our war on drugs is not going anywhere, a different approach is needed.  Is marijuana really any worse than alcohol?  There's economic benefits to legalization too.  It's time to legalize it, regulate it and tax it.
  13. Campaign Finance Reform - the Citizens United ruling was an atrocity and needs to be repealed.  Being that it's doubtful that the U.S. Supreme Court will reverse it's decision the only answer is a constitution amendment forbidding corporate personhood, let's get it done. We need to get money out of politics and this would be a good start.
  14. Supreme Court Term Limits - why do Supreme Court Justices have lifetime terms?  That's ridiculously long, how about 1 ten year term, then out with the old and in with the new.
  15. Ban the Death Penalty - it's barbaric, it's racially biased, it's costly, it's entirely possible we are sending innocent people to their death, most of the civilized world has already outlawed it, it's time we follow suit.
  16. Legalize Prostitution - why are we prohibiting the actions of consenting adultsLegalize it, regulate it, tax it and I wouldn't have an issue with it.  Regulating it would of course be the key.
  17. Reform Social Security - why would anybody want to end this program?  It's been wildly successful.  There's an easy fix too, just remove (or raise) the cap on income subject to social security taxes.  Most people pay this tax on 100% of their income, why doesn't this apply to everybody?
  18. Save the Post Office - another easy fix, the Republicans manufactured the crisis within the post office (I assume to privatize it and to rid themselves of a powerful union) by forcing the USPS to pre-fund their pension plans 75 years in advance and gave them 10 years to do it.  What business do you know of that could survive that type of stipulation?  Remove that arbitrarily selected 75 year funding limit (or lower to say 10-15 years) and problem solved.  I don't want to privatize this service, I doubt they could do it as cheaply or as effectively.  I also don't want to see the end of Saturday mail.
  19. End Affirmative Action - it had it's purpose, it was needed at one time, it did what it was suppose to do, but it's jumped the shark, all it leads to now is a form of reverse discrimination, academic mismatches and negative psychological tolls, it's time to end it.  Let's judge people on their merits, not on their race, sex, age or sexual preference.
  20. Legalize Gay Marriage - if two people love each other and want to share their lives together, who are we to tell them no?   Let's keep government out of the bedrooms, what happens between 2 consenting adults should only be of concern of those consenting adults.

Super Bowl XLVIII

Seattle Seahawks 43, Denver Broncos 8

We've definitely gotten spoiled by that string of competitive Super Bowl game that we've seen lately.  This one was a laugher, literally from the opening snap.  It was highly disappointing.  Props to Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks though, they played a heckuva game.  Bring on the NFL Draft.

Observations:
  • Saying that the Seahawks were the better team in this game is an understatement.
  • What's that old saying?  Defense wins championships!  That was certainly the case tonight.
  • Turnovers:  Broncos 4, Seahawks 0
  • This Seahawks team was the second youngest to win the Super Bowl.
  • This game certainly won't bolster Peyton Manning's case as the 'Best QB Ever".
  • Super Bowl MVP:   Malcolm Smith
  • Even the mild New Jersey temperatures were disappointing.  Snow please!!
  • The Arizona Cardinals actually come out of this game looking very good
  • Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers were the highlight of the night.  Outstanding!
  • The Super Bowl commercials were even disappointing.
  • Nice game for Percy Harvin, I'd still take Cordarrelle Patterson over him though!
  • Super Bowl Doppelganger?   Joe Namath and Macklemore.
  • Up next?  Super Bowl XLIX from Glendale, AZ!!!
