What a great year for the movies.  I'll never forget Al Pacino as Tony Montana in "Scarface".  "Trading Places" is one of Eddie Murphy's funniest films, it's also the film that made me fall in love with Jamie Lee Curtis.  What sci-fi geek didn't like "Return of the Jedi"?  What kid didn't want to party like Tom Cruise in "Risky Business"?  "Bad Boys" was a brutal look at a youth detention center, and who can forget that Cola to the face scene?  "Silkwood" was an inspiration and Meryl Streep was fantastic in it. "All the Right Moves" is a great high school football movie. "The Right Stuff" is a great story about America's space program.  "Terms of Endearment" still pulls at the heartstrings all these years later.  "A Christmas Story" is my all time favorite Christmas movie.

NCAA Football Championship Game

Ohio State 42, Oregon 20

Ohio State knocked off Oregon 42-20 tonight to win the NCAA Football Championship.  It was a pretty impressive performance by the Buckeyes, even more so considering that they were playing with their 3rd string quarterback.   Ohio State really looked the part, they're big, they're fast, they're athletic, they're physical, they're deep, they're well coached, they're very deserving of this championship!  Hats of to Ohio State!  

Observations:

• Cardale Jones is a monster with an absolute cannon of an arm. 
• I wasn't a fan of that 2nd quarter, 4th & goal attempt by Oregon, take the points.  
• Ohio State was much better in the trenches on both sides of the ball.  
• I'd be leery of drafting Marcus Mariotta early in the NFL draft.  System QB. 
• Ezekiel Elliott is a pretty impressive looking RB for Ohio State. 
• Mark Helfrich is no Urban Meyer.  Not many are though. 
• I'm really not a fan of these gimmicky no huddle offenses.   
• Remember when people said it was a down year for the Big Ten?  
• Is there a better deep threat in college football than Ohio State WR Devin Smith? 
• Turnovers:  Ohio State 4, Oregon 1
• It'll be interesting to see how the Ohio State quarterback situation shakes out. 
• Why doesn't an NFL team look into hiring Urban Meyer as head coach?  
• Doppelganger central:  Ref & Bob Newhart, Cardale Jones & Jameis Winston. 
• I'll bet that Darren Carrington could have helped Oregon tonight.  
• Minnesota played Ohio State tougher than Oregon did.

7. Sixteen Candles - Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall

The films in this list didn't win many awards but they were great fun to watch, well with the exception of "The Killing Fields" which was horrifying.  James Cameron's "The Terminator" is sci-fi at it's best.  "Beverly Hills Cop" is Eddie Murphy's best film, it's hilarious.  How can anyone forget Bill Murray getting slimed in "Ghostbusters"?  "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" was every bit as fun and entertaining as the original.  "The Natural" is one of the best baseball films ever.  When you think of quintessential 80's movies "Sixteen Candles" and "The Karate Kid" are probably two of the first movies you think of.   I loved everything about Prince and Morris Day in "Purple Rain", it's cool and funky, the story is great and music is outstanding.  The original "Red Dawn" was the perfect movie for it's time and the casting was outstanding.

Grading the College Coaching Hires

With Michigan's hiring of Jim Harbaugh as head football coach, I thought that it would be a good time to rank the college football hires, so here goes:

1. Michigan - how can you give Michigan anything but an A+
2. Youngstown State - home run, how did they manage to swing Bo Pelini?  A+
3. Oregon State - I think the Riley for Anderson swap is a net positive for OSU.  B+
4. Houston - Tom Herman was the hottest assistant out there.  B
5. Florida - not splashy, but Jim McElwain has the makings of a great hire.  B-
6. Pitt - it was only a matter of time before Pat Narduzzi got a shot.  B-
7. Buffalo - it's about time someone hired Lance Leipold.  B
8. Nebraska - Mike Riley is a very good coach, is he an upgrade though?  C
9. Colorado State - Mike Bobo doesn't excite me much, great opportunity for him though.  C
10. Wisconsin - Paul Chryst was rather mediocre at Pitt, he may be a decent fit at WI though.  C
11. Kansas - David Beaty has Tim Brewster written all over him.  D
12. UNLV - a high school coach?  really?  F

Panthers 27, Cardinals 16

NFC WILDCARD PLAYOFFS

Just like that, the Cardinals are eliminated from the playoff, falling 27-16 to the Carolina Panthers today.  It was a very disappointing end to what started out as such a promising season.  It'll be an interesting off season for the Cardinals, they have lots of areas to address if they want to improve on this season.  11 wins and a playoff berth really is quite an accomplishment though considering all they went through this season.  Thanks for a fun season Cards!

Observations:

• That Cardinals offense was absolutely horrid today.  
• It's hard to win in the playoffs with the backup to the backup QB. 
• I still find it hard to believe that Logan Thomas isn't better than Ryan Lindley. 
• Dave Zastudil was sorely missed by the Cardinals this year. 
• Poor offense and punting really killed the Cardinals in the battle of field position. 
• Should a 7-9 team really be hosting an NFL playoff game?  
• That may well have been Larry Fitzgerald's last game as a Cardinal. 
• Total Yards:  Panthers 386, Cardinals 78
• Time of Possession:  Panthers 37:06, Cardinals 22:54
• First Downs:  Panthers 25, Cardinals 8
• The Cardinals lack of a running game came back to haunt them.  
• This was not what I would call the best officiated game that I've ever seen. 
• Say what Ed Hochuli?  Jungle Boy?   
• I would be okay with the Cardinals bringing in a new kick returner next season. 
• The Cardinals defense was really disappointing down the stretch. 
• Steve Keim's fatal flaw this season was not bringing in another QB. 
• Could this be the last we see of Todd Bowles on the Cardinals sidelines?  
• The Cardinals next man up approach was bound to falter at some point. 
• There may not be a better linebacker in football than Luke Kuechly.  
• Jonathan Stewart is the type of RB the Cardinals need to bring in next season. 
• Up next?   NFL Draft on April 30, 2015.

Citrus Bowl

Missouri 33, Minnesota 17

The Gophers closed out their 2014-15 season today with a 33-17 loss to Missouri in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL.  The Gophers finish the season with an 8-5 record.  Despite the score, this was a winnable game, they just made too many uncharacteristic mistakes.  Overall though, I cannot be upset with how this season went for the Gophers, I saw continued progress out of them and I really like the direction that Jerry Kill has them moving.  Nice job Gophers!

Observation:

• This was the first time the Gophers had played in January since 1962!  
• I'm not sure that I've seen Mitch Leidner throw the ball better than he did today. 
• Minnesota was way too conservative to end the first half for my tastes. 
• It seemed like Missouri was playing to win and the Gophers playing not to lose. 
• That Missouri defensive line is pretty impressive.  
• It was a relatively quiet day for David Cobb in his last game as a Gopher. 
• Much to his dismay, Jerry Kill has yet to win a bowl game. 
• 4th Quarter Scoring:  Missouri 14, Minnesota 0
• Turnovers:  Minnesota 3, Missouri 2
• Rushing Yards:  Missouri 337, Minnesota 106
• Way too many mistakes by the Gophers today.  
• It was a rare off day for Gophers punter Pete Mortell.  
• The Gophers RB depth is very impressive.  More on the way too.  
• Eric Murray had a heckuva game at CB for the Gophers.  
• That fumbled punt return by Marcus Jones was a killer.  
• Minnesota desperately needs a big play WR for their offense.  
• Go pro Maxx Williams!  You have nothing left to prove at the collegiate level! 
• When Missouri found those running lanes momentum really swung their way. 
• Briean Boddy-Calhoun showed why he was first team All-B1G today.  
• Loved that fake punt to a defensive lineman by Missouri. Nice on-side kick too. 
• Was that Eric Decker on the Gophers sidelines?  
• I  have always felt that Missouri would have been a better fit in B1G than the SEC.
