Anthony Bennett 1st Pick of NBA Draft

Anthony Bennett was selected #1 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2013 NBA Draft.



The Phoenix Suns used their number 1 pick (#5 overall) on Alex Len.
With their second first round pick (#29 overall), the Suns selected Archie Goodwin.  

The Minnesota Timberwolves used their number 1 pick (#9 overall) on Trey Burke.  
The Timberwolves then traded Burke to the Utah Jazz for 2 first round draft picks (#14 & #21).
With pick #14 overall, the Timberwolves then selected Shabazz Muhammad.  
With pick #21 overall, the Timberwolves then selected Gorgui Dieng.

TPSG 2013 NBA Mock Draft 3.0

The 2013 NBA Draft is tomorrow, it's time for a final Mock Draft.  I'm still thinking Alex Len will go over Nerlens Noel at number one overall, I just don't think the Cavs are comfortable enough with Noel's health to grab him first overall.  Hopefully Oladipo or McLemore fall to the Suns at number five.  I suspect that the Timberwolves will grab Caldwell-Pope but it wouldn't shock me to see them pick Cody Zeller at number nine either.  Anyways, here goes:

Timberwolves Thoughts

With the 2013 NBA Draft coming up on Thursday I'm feeling compelled to voice a few thoughts on my favorite team, the Minnesota Timberwolves.  I keep hearing some rather outlandish trade rumors involving them and it's honestly making me a little nervous.  Their problem last year wasn't so much lack of talent as much as it was the fact that they couldn't stay healthy.  Their best player, Kevin Love, missed most of the year due to injury.  Their second best player, Ricky Rubio, missed much of the early part of the season and only seemed to be back at full strength down the stretch.  Brandon Roy, who they signed to play OG, never panned out.  Chase Budinger who was brought in to provide some outside shooting missed most of the season.  Nikola Peckovic & Andrei Kirlenko both also missed stretches of time.  Josh Howard was also signed during the season to provide depth and he immediately got hurt and was never a factor.  It was almost comical.  Had they all stayed healthy I'm convinced they could have won an additional 10-15 games (at a minimum).  I really don't see the need for drastic changes.  With a healthy K-Love & Ricky Rubio they will be set at the PF and PG spots.  Pekovic looked great when he was healthy, I really hope they sign him to an extension.  If so, that leaves them pretty well set at 3 of their 5 starting spots.  I also liked the way Andrei Kirlenko played, while limited athletically, he just does so many of the little things well, many of which don't seem to go unnoticed, I'd be happy to see him back at the SF spot (albeit at a lower salary).  Derrick Williams had a much better 2nd season and is still just 21 years old, he can provide some nice depth in the front court at either forward spot.  IMO it would be much too early to give up on him (unless they do very well in a trade for him).  Alexey Shved showed a lot of promise as a rookie, I suspect that he will continue to improve as he adjusts to the NBA game, he can also play either guard spot which provides depth in the backcourt.  I would also love to see them bring back Budinger, his game is really a good fit with Rubio and Love, I'd like to see what the three of them could do if all healthy.  If they could somehow keep that nucleus together (and healthy) and somehow find an OG, then make a few other tweaks, I think that they'd be fine.  They do have some trade chips available to make a few moves, they've got 2 first round and 2 second round draft picks available, plus they've got Luke Ridnour & J.J. Barea available for trade and they both have some value.  I could see them maybe packaging a few of those assets together to either move up in the draft or trading for an established player.  I'm hoping for the best at this point and I'm confident that Flip Saunders will make the right moves.  It'll be interesting to see what happens.

"This Is The End" - starring Seth Rogan, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Danny McBride and a host of others in a black comedy about the end of the world.  This is a funny movie, I laughed pretty much all the way through it.  It is kind of dark humor though and it did get a bit crude at times so I'm guessing it won't be for everybody.  They all play themselves, they are at a party at James Franco's Hollywood home when the apocalypse hits.  The interactions between them while they fight for survival is hilarious.  Michael Cera really cracked me up too in his parts.  Overall, I really enjoyed it, if you're looking for a few laughs, check it out.  

I will give it 4 out of 5 stars  (*****).

TPSG 2013 NBA Mock Draft 2.0

With the Miami Heat knocking off the San Antonio Spurs last night to win the 2013 NBA championship, it's time to shift focus to the 2013 NBA Draft.  I'm made a few updates from Version 1.0.  I'm still not certain which direction the Cavs will go in round 1, I think it's down to Len and Noel, it probably comes down to how confident that they feel Noel is going to come back from his knee injury.  At this point, rumblings are that they are not real comfortable with selecting him number 1 overall, if that's the case it will probably be Len.  Anyways, here goes with Version 2.0:

Hot A$$ Women!

Man of Steel

"Man of Steel" starring Henry Cavil & Amy Adams.  There's a lot to like about the latest re-imagining of the Superman saga, the cast is superb, Cavil and Adams showed some nice chemistry, the special effect are top notch but in the end it just seemed to play out too much like a 'Transformer' movie for my tastes with seemingly endless CGI battles scene after endless CGI battle scene.  Perhaps having Christopher Nolan's name associated with it set my expectations too high, unfortunately he was only the producer of this film, not the director.  The directing chores went to Zach Snyder of '300' & 'Watchmen' fame.  Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a horrible movie, but I doubt you'll find it on any year end top 10 lists. 

I will give it 3 out of 5 stars (*****). 

Top 10 Stand Up Comics of All Time

This is completely subjective I know, but here's one man's opinion:

1. George Carlin - how can he not be number 1?  
2. Eddie Murphy - his early stuff is legendary.  
3. Louis C.K. - probably the top stand up comic out there right now.
4. Sam Kinison -crude, vulgar, loud, hilarious!
5. Steven Wright - his deadpan style is one of a kind. 
6. Chris Rock - much better stand up comic than actor.
7. Jerry Seinfeld - based much of his TV show on his act.
8. Rodney Dangerfield - he's a stand up comic icon. 
9. Richard Pryor - a man before his time. 
10. Mitch Hedberg - gone way too soon.

Mark Appel Goes Number 1 in MLB Draft

Mark Appel, RHP, Stanford was the number 1 overall pick of the 2013 MLB Draft today.  IMO he really was the class of this draft class, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he is pitching in the majors before this season is out.  You can find the compete draft tracker here.  Kohl Stewart went to the Twins at number 4, the Diamondbacks meanwhile selected Braden Shipley at number 15.  Round 1 analysis here.

2013 MLB Draft Thoughts

The 2013 MLB Draft is tomorrow.  Being a Twins fan, and given the fact that the Twins will have the fourth overall pick in the draft, I have been paying quite a bit of attention to this years draft.  There seems to be a consensus top 3 guys this year, then another group of about 6-7 guys who could land anywhere from 4-10, it may not be the best year to have pick number 4.  Anyways, the following appear to be the consensus Top 10 players available:

As for who the Twins will be selecting with the number 4 overall pick, I really think it's down to four guys, Jonathan Gray, Mark Appel, Kris Bryant & Kohl Stewart.  I fully expect that Gray, Appel & Bryant will go 1-2-3, as mentioned above they are clearly the class of this draft.  In that scenario I'm pretty sure that the Twins will then select Kohl Stewart with their pick.  Now there has been some speculation that the Astros may select Colin Moran number 1 overall and then sign him to an under slot deal so that they can spend more later in the draft, but I think that would be foolhardy.  The Astros followed a similar plan last year and it cost them Byron Buxton and I can't help but think they'd like a do-over on that one.  If the Astros do inexplicably take Moran number 1 overall, that would push either Gray, Appel or Bryant down a slot and if that were to happen, I have to believe that the Twins would quickly snatch up whichever one fell into their laps (I'm guessing they rate them Gray, Appel, then Bryant) over Kohl Stewart.  Reese McGuire is the other name I've been hearing associated with the Twins pick but I doubt they pull the trigger on him at number 4 overall, that would just be too much of a reach IMO.

As for the Diamondbacks, they will be selecting number 15 overall.  I'm not quite sure who they are looking at, I suspect they will use the BPA approach.  My guess is that they hope someone like Austin Meadows, Hunter Renfroe or Ryan Stanek fall to them, I'm guessing none of them do though.  That leaves guys like J.P. Crawford, Chris Anderson, Dominic Smith, Ian Clarkin, Trey Ball and Alex Gonzalez.  I will go out on a limb and predict that they end up with SS J.P. Crawford, he's the clear best SS in the draft and I'm thinking the BPA, of course that could change if someone falls into their laps (which in the baseball draft is not out of the realm of possibility).

Netflix Streaming Plan

I've been getting DVD's from Netflix for years but just recently bought a Roku device and added the Netflix streaming service.  I'm loving it so far.  I admit, the fact that they are now airing their own original programming played a major factor in my decision.  I've already finished watching "House of Cards" and the new season of "Arrested Development".   I loved "House of Cards", it immediately ranks as one of my favorite television shows, "Arrested Development" not so much, after all the build up I was honestly a bit let down.  Still, it's quality programming and I'm hoping there is much more to come, I also love the fact that the entire season is released at one time, you can watch them all in one sitting if you so choose. They could very well change the face of how we watch television if they keep this up.  You also get a whole library of films/television shows that you can watch at your leisure.  If I had a criticism, it's that they really don't have a lot of newly released movies available on their streaming service (you still need to get the DVD's mailed to you for that), if they can fix that problem, and I don't know why it's not possible, they will absolutely rule.
